Chapter 3 - The Clue in the Blanket

Morning arrived not with light, but with a dull, bruised-purple sky over the city skyline.

The rain had softened into a bone-chilling mist that hung heavy in the air. By six in the morning, the city’s heart began to beat again—delivery trucks rumbled down paved avenues, street sweepers swept water into storm drains, and the smell of fresh coffee drifted from bakeries.

Kayla moved through the alleys like a shadow, keeping the baby hidden deep inside her oversized coat. To keep the child from crying out from hunger, she had dipped a corner of a clean cloth into warm water sweetened with a bit of crushed sugar she had saved from a diner counter days ago. The baby sucked on the cloth greedily, quieted for the moment, but Kayla knew time was running out.

She needed answers, and on the lower east side of the city, answers lived in one place: Old Man Marcus’s repair shop.

Marcus was a former doctor who had fallen on hard times decades ago after losing his family. Now seventy years old, he lived in a basement workshop surrounded by ticking clocks, broken radios, and stacks of yellowed newspapers. He was the only adult on the streets whom the alley kids trusted, because he never asked questions and never handed kids over to the authorities without their consent.

Kayla descended the stone steps of the basement shop, pushing open the heavy wooden door. A brass bell chimed softly.

Old Man Marcus looked up from a brass pocket watch he was fixing under a bright magnifying lamp. His silver hair was unruly, his eyes sharp behind thick spectacles.

"Kayla?" Marcus frowned, setting down his tweezers. "Child, you look like you swam through the river. What are you doing out in this cold?"

Kayla didn't answer with words. She stepped into the warm room, walked straight to his workbench, and carefully unzipped her coat.

Marcus’s jaw dropped. He stood up so fast his wooden stool knocked against the wall.

"Merciful heavens," Marcus gasped, stepping closer. "Is that... is that a newborn?"

"A woman dropped her at the landfill last night," Kayla said, her voice completely devoid of childhood innocence. "In the storm. She covered her with trash bags and drove away in a black car."

Marcus stared at Kayla in sheer disbelief before his instincts as a former physician took over. "Put the child on the table. Quickly."

With gentle, experienced hands, Marcus examined the baby. He checked her chest with an old stethoscope, checked her reflexes, and cleared her tiny nasal passages.

"She's dehydrated and chilled, but her lungs are clear," Marcus breathed, letting out a long gust of air. "She couldn't be more than two or three weeks old, Kayla. If you hadn't found her... she wouldn't have survived the night."

"She needs milk, Marcus," Kayla pleaded, reaching into her pocket and pulling out three damp dollar bills and a handful of copper coins she had saved. "Please. I have money."

Marcus pushed her tiny hand back into her pocket. "Keep your coins, child. I have powdered infant formula in my back room from a care package the church dropped off last week."

While Marcus prepared a warm bottle of milk, Kayla laid the wool blanket and the gold locket on the wooden workbench.

Marcus returned, holding a warm bottle. He fed the baby gently, watching as the child drank with desperate, rhythmic gulps. Then his eyes drifted to the items on his bench.

He picked up the wool blanket, running his thumb over the embroidered lion crest. Then he picked up the gold locket and opened it.

His face turned as pale as fresh snow.

"Marcus?" Kayla watched his expression shift from shock to absolute horror. "Do you know who they are?"

Marcus walked over to a stack of yesterday's newspapers resting near his wood stove. He grabbed the front page of the City Financial Chronicle and laid it flat beside the gold locket.

The front page featured a massive photograph of the exact same man and woman from the locket.

The bold headline read:

THE WEDDING OF THE CENTURY: BILLIONAIRE ETHAN VANCE TO WED HEIRESS GISELLE STERLING TONIGHT AT THE GRAND PALACE HOTEL.

"Ethan Vance..." Marcus whispered, his finger trembling as he touched the newspaper photo. "He owns Vance Enterprises. Half the skyscrapers in this city bear his family's name. He's one of the wealthiest men in the country."

Kayla stared at the picture of Giselle Sterling on the newspaper front page. She was wearing a diamond necklace, smiling elegantly at the camera beside Ethan Vance.

"That's her," Kayla said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "That's the woman from the black car. She's the one who threw the baby in the mud."

Marcus looked from the newspaper to the infant drinking peacefully from the bottle. "Giselle Sterling... she's the daughter of Sterling Global Logistics. If she had a baby out of wedlock, or if this child threatened her upcoming marriage to Vance..." Marcus shuddered, the dark logic of high society aligning in his mind. "A scandal like this would destroy her marriage, her family's reputation, and her access to the Vance fortune."

"She tried to kill her," Kayla said, her eyes flashing with pure rage. "She threw her away like trash so she could marry that rich man tonight."

"Kayla, listen to me," Marcus said urgently, leaning down and taking the young girl by her small shoulders. "These people are dangerous. They have millions of dollars, private security, and lawyers who can make people disappear. You cannot get involved in this. We must take this child to a hospital anonymously."

Kayla pulled away from Marcus's grip, her posture rigid. She looked at the baby, who was now drifting off to sleep with a full belly, holding tightly onto Kayla’s thumb.

"If we give her to a hospital, Giselle Sterling will find out," Kayla said with terrifying clarity. "She'll pay someone to take the baby away forever, and no one will ever know what she did. That woman doesn't get to wear a diamond dress and pretend to be good while this baby has no name."

"What are you going to do?" Marcus asked softly, fear evident in his eyes.

May you like

Kayla picked up the gold locket, clutching it in her small fist.

"The newspaper says the party is tonight at the Grand Palace Hotel," Kayla said. "I'm going to give Ethan Vance his baby back."
