Chapter 4 - The Infiltration

By seven o'clock that evening, the storm had returned with renewed violence, wrapping the city’s glass skyscrapers in thick fog and driving rain.

Outside the Grand Palace Hotel, the scene was straight out of a Hollywood movie. A long red carpet stretched from the street to the hotel's grand gilded entrance, sheltered beneath a massive glass canopy. Dozens of luxury limousines lined the boulevard, dropping off men in sharp tuxedos and women draped in furs and diamonds.

A sea of news reporters and photographers stood behind velvet ropes, their camera flashes popping like lightning through the mist.

"Welcome to the engagement gala of Ethan Vance and Giselle Sterling!" a television reporter broadcasted live into his microphone. "Inside the Grand Ballroom, three hundred of the nation's most powerful elites have gathered to celebrate what many are calling the union of two massive corporate empires!"

Neither the reporters nor the heavy security team noticed the small shadow moving through the flooded alleyway behind the hotel's kitchen loading dock.

Kayla moved like a fox in the night. She had wrapped the baby in dry wool, tucked her securely inside an insulated delivery bag Marcus had given her, and strapped it tightly against her chest beneath her gray jacket. She had made two small air holes in the top of the bag so the infant could breathe comfortably.

The baby was sleeping softly, lulled by the rhythm of Kayla’s steady heartbeat.

Kayla ducked behind a row of large metal commercial dumpsters as a massive food delivery truck backed into the loading dock. Two tall guards in dark suits stood near the open rolling door, holding clipboards and earpieces.

"Keep the dock clear!" one guard barked into his lapel radio. "Mr. Vance wants absolute security tonight. Nobody gets through without a security clearance badge."

Kayla crouched low in the cold puddle, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew she couldn't walk through the front door—guards would tackle an eight-year-old street child before she even reached the red carpet. She had to go through the bowels of the building.

She waited.

A caterer dressed in a white chef’s jacket came out of the dock doors carrying several empty wooden crates, setting them down near the dumpsters before turning back inside to answer a shouting chef.

In that five-second window of distraction, Kayla moved.

She darted across the wet concrete, ducked under the rising hydraulic tailgate of the delivery truck, and slipped through the heavy rubber strip curtains into the steaming, noisy kitchen of the hotel.

The kitchen was total chaos. Dozens of line cooks were shouting orders in three languages, pots of soup boiled fiercely on gas stoves, and waiters in crisp black uniforms picked up trays of champagne glasses and caviar.

"More oysters on table four!" a head chef screamed, throwing a rag across his shoulder. "Move! The main toast is in twenty minutes!"

Kayla pressed herself against the tiled wall, keeping behind a rack of stainless steel food carts. She moved slowly, step by step, dodging bustling waiters and pastry chefs.

She reached the service elevator at the end of the kitchen hall.

An elevator door clicked open. A young room service attendant pushed a linen cart out. Kayla slipped past him, sliding into the elevator car just before the heavy brass doors slid shut.

She looked at the floor buttons.

Floor 1: Main Lobby. Floor 2: Executive Offices. Floor 3: Grand Ballroom.

Her small finger hesitated over the illuminated button for Floor 3.

She looked down at her dark, mud-stained jacket. Her boots were soaked, leaving dirty water footprints on the pristine brass floor of the elevator. Underneath her jacket, she felt the gentle, warm rise and fall of the baby’s chest.

"Just a little longer," Kayla whispered into her collar, touching the gold locket resting safely in her pocket. "We're almost there."

The elevator hummed smoothly as it ascended.

Floor 2...

Floor 3.

A soft chime sounded. The brass doors slid open, revealing a world of incomprehensible luxury.

Crystal chandeliers hung from towering gold-leaf ceilings, casting warm, glittering light over hundreds of guests drinking champagne from tall crystal flutes. Women wore silk gowns that trailed across thick, plush crimson carpets, while classical string quartets played softly in the background.

At the far end of the ballroom, on an elevated marble stage decorated with thousands of white orchids, stood the couple of the hour.

Giselle Sterling looked breathtaking in a dazzling silver-and-white gown encrusted with thousands of tiny diamonds. She held a glass of pink champagne, her sharp, elegant face radiating supreme triumph as she leaned against her fiance.

Beside her stood Ethan Vance.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and striking, his presence dominating the entire room. Yet his face held a subtle, brooding distance, as if his mind were miles away from the superficial noise of the crowd surrounding him.

Kayla took a deep breath, stepped out of the elevator, and walked straight toward the red carpet leading into the center of the ballroom.
