Chapter 6 - The Shattered Gala

Ethan Vance stood up slowly.
The atmosphere in the grand ballroom shifted instantaneously. It was as if the temperature in the room had dropped thirty degrees. The powerful, brooding billionaire turned around, holding the golden locket and the torn hospital wristband in his hand.
He looked at Giselle Sterling.
Giselle was backed against the stage wall, sweating through her makeup, her chest heaving as she tried to form words that wouldn't come out.
"Ethan..." Giselle whimpered, taking a tiny step toward him, holding out her manicured hands. "Ethan, darling, please... you have to listen to me. That child is lying! Someone stole that locket from your house! It's a setup! I swear to God, it's a setup!"
Ethan didn't speak. He raised his hand, signaling his personal chief of security, a massive former Special Forces officer named Vance Harrison, who immediately stepped out of the shadows near the entrance.
"Harrison," Ethan commanded, his voice slicing through the room like a razor blade. "Lock the doors. Nobody leaves this ballroom. Not a single guest, not a single waiter, not a single reporter."
"Yes, Mr. Vance," Harrison barked into his headset.
Within seconds, the heavy mahogany double doors of the ballroom slammed shut with a deafening boom. Electronic magnetic locks clicked into place. The security detail took positions at every exit.
Panicked whispers broke out among the three hundred wealthy guests.
"Ethan! You can't hold us here!" Giselle's father, Senator Arthur Sterling, shouted from the VIP table, standing up in fury. "This is outrageous! You're humiliating my daughter based on the word of a filthy street urchin!"
Ethan turned his icy gaze onto the Senator.
"Senator Sterling," Ethan said coldly, "if your daughter is innocent, she has nothing to fear. But if a child of my blood was thrown into a landfill last night, God help your entire family."
The word echoed off the golden chandeliers like a thunderclap.
A child of my blood.
Giselle let out a choked scream and collapsed onto her knees among the shattered glass of champagne flutes.
Ethan turned back to Kayla. He reached out his arms, his movements surprisingly gentle for a man known throughout the business world as a ruthless titan.
"May I hold her, Kayla?" Ethan asked quietly.
Kayla looked at him carefully, searching his face for any sign of deception. She saw only profound shock, intense pain, and a fierce, instinctual protectiveness.
Slowly, Kayla handed the heavy bundle over.
Ethan held the newborn infant against his chest. As he looked down at the child’s face, his eyes caught a tiny, dark birthmark behind the baby’s left ear—a dark, star-shaped mark that was identical to the birthmark Ethan had behind his own left ear.
A tear welled up in Ethan Vance's dark eye and rolled down his cheek.
He looked up at his head of medical security, who had just rushed into the room through a side door carrying a medical bag.
"Dr. Aris," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "Take Kayla and the child to my private suite on the top floor immediately. Give the baby a full medical evaluation. Give Kayla hot food, warm clothes, and whatever she wants. Put four armed guards outside the door."
"Understood, sir," Dr. Aris bowed, gently guiding Kayla toward the private elevator.
Kayla hesitated, looking back at Ethan. "You won't let them hurt her?"
Ethan looked at the little homeless girl who had saved his baby’s life, a solemn, sacred promise forming in his heart.
"Nobody will ever hurt either of you again, Kayla," Ethan promised. "I give you my word."
As the private elevator doors closed, taking Kayla and the baby to safety, Ethan Vance turned back to face the ballroom. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number on speakerphone.
"Dr. Vance," a voice answered over the ballroom speakers. "This is the Director of Central City Memorial Hospital."
"Director," Ethan said, his voice echoing across the silent room. "I need an immediate, high-priority audit of the private maternity wing for three weeks ago. Check the birth records for Giselle Sterling."
Giselle screamed, crawling across the floor toward Ethan, grabbing at his trousers. "ETHAN! NO! PLEASE! DON'T DO THIS!"
Over the speaker, the Director cleared his throat nervously. "Mr. Vance... those records were sealed under a high-level non-disclosure agreement by the Sterling family three weeks ago. But... given your authority, I am looking at the digital file now."
The room held its breath.
"Giselle Sterling was admitted secretly on July 12th," the Director read aloud. "She delivered a healthy baby girl at 4:15 AM. The birth father listed on the confidential intake form... is Ethan Vance."
A collective gasp exploded across the ballroom. Photographers went wild, camera flashes lighting up the room like a blizzard of white light.
Giselle covered her face, sobbing hysterically on the floor.
"Why?" Ethan asked, looking down at the woman he was supposed to marry in an hour, his voice dripping with pure disgust. "Why did you hide her? Why did you throw her away?"
Giselle looked up, her makeup ruined, her face twisted in a ugly, sociopathic rage.
"BECAUSE SHE WOULD HAVE RUINED EVERYTHING!" Giselle shrieked, her voice echoing with madness. "You were going to sign the prenuptial agreement tomorrow! The agreement that guaranteed my family fifty percent of Vance Enterprises upon marriage! If you knew I was pregnant before the signing, your lawyers would have delayed the wedding! They would have put the wealth into a child trust instead of my name!"
She pointed a trembling, manicured hand at Ethan, her eyes wild.
"I didn't want a child! I wanted your empire! She was just a mistake! A worthless piece of flesh that stood between me and billions of dollars!"
The entire ballroom stared at Giselle Sterling in utter, horrific revulsion. Her own father, Senator Sterling, sat down slowly in his chair, covering his face in absolute shame.
Ethan looked down at her as if she were a worm writhing in the dirt.
"You're right, Giselle," Ethan whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal intensity. "She stood between you and my wealth. And now, she has destroyed you."
May you like
He turned to his chief of security.
"Harrison. Call the police. Have her arrested for attempted murder and child abandonment. And tell my legal team to destroy every business contract associated with the Sterling family by morning."
