Chapter 3 - The Midnight Banishing

The Lake Forest ballroom was at the peak of its grandeur when Adrian and Vanessa re-emerged from the service corridor.
Champagne flutes clinked under the massive crystal chandeliers. High-society patrons, venture capitalists, and political figures laughed in refined clusters while a woodwind quintet played Mozart near the conservatory glass.
To anyone watching, Adrian and Vanessa appeared every bit the power couple of Chicago. Adrian walked with a stoic, commanding presence, while Vanessa glided beside him, her head held high. But those who knew Adrian well—his head of public relations, his chief legal counsel standing near the bar—noticed the absolute absence of warmth in his frame.
Vanessa leaned close to his ear, her breath warm against his skin, carrying the faint scent of crushed vanilla and mint.
"We can still fix this," she murmured, her voice laced with a desperate, razor-sharp edge. "Call Marcus back. Tell him it was a mistake. If this leaks to the Tribune or the tech markets tomorrow, Mercer Ridge Technologies stock will drop twenty percent before the opening bell."
"Mercer Ridge stock survived my father's death, Vanessa," Adrian said, keeping his eyes on the crowd. "It will survive your downfall."
Adrian stepped onto the raised orchestra riser near the grand piano. He picked up a silver spoon and struck the edge of a crystal goblet.
The sharp, ringing chime carried across the marble floor.
Gradually, the conversations ceased. Two hundred pairs of eyes turned toward the stage. Cameras flashed from the press corner near the entrance.
Vanessa stood at the base of the riser, her hands clasped tightly in front of her dress, her knuckles turning white.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Adrian began, his voice deep, clear, and perfectly echoed by the acoustics of the ballroom. "Thank you for joining us tonight at the Lake Forest estate."
Applauses broke out softly, then died down as guests noticed the sternness in his face.
"When I invited you here tonight, I believed we were celebrating the beginning of a life built on trust, loyalty, and shared vision," Adrian continued, his gaze drifting over the crowd before landing squarely on Vanessa. "However, truth has a way of asserting itself at unexpected moments. Tonight, certain revelations have come to light regarding the integrity of this engagement."
A collective murmur rippled through the room. Vanessa’s mother, sitting in the front row, dropped her champagne glass onto the carpet.
"The engagement is dissolved, effective immediately," Adrian stated plainly. "I must ask you all to finish your drinks, accept my deepest apologies, and exit the premises. My private security team will assist you with valet service."
The ballroom exploded into whispers, gasps, and the rapid clicking of camera shutters.
"Adrian!" Vanessa’s father, Richard Hale, roared, pushing through the crowd with a flushed face. "What the hell is the meaning of this insult? You can’t publicly disgrace my daughter like this!"
"I suggest you ask your daughter what she has been putting in my evening tea for the past four months, Richard," Adrian replied calmly, stepping down from the riser.
Richard froze, looking at Vanessa with sudden, pale confusion.
Vanessa did not weep. She did not plead. She stood in the center of the parting crowd as guests pulled back from her as if she were carrying a plague. Her silver gown caught the glare of the chandeliers, making her look like an icy statue in the middle of a ruined palace.
Two dark-suited security guards stepped up beside her.
"Ms. Hale," the lead guard said respectfully but firmly. "Mr. Mercer has revoked your access to the estate. Your belongings will be packed and delivered to your downtown penthouse by noon tomorrow. We have a car waiting to escort you off the property."
Vanessa turned her head slowly, looking at Adrian across the marble floor. The crowd held its breath.

"You think you’re smart, Adrian," she whispered, her voice carrying across the silent room with terrifying clarity. "You think you’ve caught me. But you have no idea how deep this root goes."
She turned on her silver heels and walked out of the ballroom, flanked by security, leaving two hundred stunned elites in her wake.
