Chapter 5 - The Silent Witness

The rain cleared by sunrise, leaving the gardens outside the Lake Forest estate dripping with morning dew.

In the sunlit breakfast nook on the ground floor, four-year-old Lily sat on a high wooden chair, her bare feet swinging back and forth. She was eating a bowl of oatmeal drizzled with honey, while her mother, Nora, sat beside her, nervously sipping a cup of coffee.

Adrian walked into the nook, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit.

When Lily saw him, her face lit up with a brilliant, wide smile. She set her spoon down, raised both hands, and signed: Good morning, big man.

Adrian couldn't help the small, genuine smile that broke across his tired face. He sat down across from her and signed back: Good morning, little captain.

Nora looked up, her hands trembling around her mug. "Mr. Mercer... the guards said we could leave this morning if we wanted to. I... I don't know how to thank you for protecting us last night, but I need to find a place for us to stay. My apartment rent is due, and if Ms. Hale..."

"You are not going back to your apartment, Nora," Adrian said firmly. "And you are not leaving this estate."

Nora blinked. "Sir?"

"Vanessa Hale knows that you and Lily are the primary witnesses who exposed her," Adrian explained. "Until she and her co-conspirators are in federal custody, this house is the safest place on the East Coast for both of you. I’m assigning Marcus’s team to guard you around the clock."

Nora’s eyes filled with tears. "I can't pay for this, Mr. Mercer. I’m just a maid."

"You saved my life, Nora," Adrian said gently. "And your daughter gave me back my future. You will never have to worry about rent, employment, or medical bills ever again. That is a promise."

Lily tapped Adrian’s forearm with her tiny finger.

When Adrian turned to her, Lily formed a gesture with her hands: Blue house.

Adrian frowned slightly. Blue house? he signed back.

Lily nodded vigorously. She picked up a crayon from the coloring pad on the table and drew a picture of a tall, thin blue building with a silver garage door. Beside it, she drew a small picture of a woman with long blonde hair placing a black metal box under a car seat.

Nora leaned over, looking at the drawing. "Oh... God. That’s Ms. Hale’s private garage on Michigan Avenue. The one she uses for her vintage sports car."

"She kept a black box there?" Adrian asked Nora.

"Lily used to go with me when I cleaned Ms. Hale’s private penthouse," Nora explained, her voice dropping. "Ms. Hale would leave us in the garage while she went upstairs. Lily spends hours sitting in the back of the car, watching everything. She notices things adults completely overlook."

Lily touched Adrian’s hand again, her expression serious. She pointed to her own ear, then made a slashing motion with her hand—No hearing. Then she pointed to the drawing of the black metal box.

Adrian looked at the drawing, then at Marcus, who was standing near the door.

"She kept the chemical inventory in the garage box," Marcus realized. "Along with her communication records."

"Call the state police," Adrian ordered, standing up. "We’re going to Michigan Avenue."
