Chapter 8 - Reunion and Revelation

Three days later, the sun finally broke through the Colorado clouds, bathing St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital in a warm, golden glow.

In room 214, the atmosphere had transformed entirely. The heavy curtains were pulled wide open, letting the bright afternoon light flood the room. On the bedside table sat a vase of fresh yellow daisies, a stack of coloring books, and a plate of warm chocolate chip pancakes.

Ashley sat up in bed, wearing a bright pink zip-up hoodie, her hair brushed and tied back with a purple bow.

The door opened softly, and a nurse wheeled in a guest.

Andrew sat in a comfortable reclining wheelchair, his right leg encased in a heavy plaster cast, his face sporting fading purple bruises and a row of stitches along his jawline. But his eyes—the eyes Ashley had cried for every night—were alive with tears of pure joy.

“Daddy!” Ashley gasped, throwing off her blanket and scrambling across the mattress.

“My baby,” Andrew choked out, opening his arms wide as Ashley tumbled into his lap, burying her face in his shoulder and sobbing tears of absolute relief.

“I knew you didn't leave me,” she wept, wrapping her small arms around his neck so tight she nearly cut off his air. “I knew you were coming back.”

“I’m so sorry I was late, sweetheart,” Andrew whispered, kissing her head over and over again as his own tears fell freely. “I’m never leaving you again. Never.”

Natalie stood by the doorway, watching the reunion with her husband Adam, both of them wiping away stray tears.

The two Apex Logistics executives who had tried to run Andrew off the road and cover up their corporate crimes were currently sitting in maximum-security holding cells, facing federal indictment for attempted murder, corporate fraud, and criminal conspiracy. The state labor audit had successfully dismantled their corrupt operation, ensuring justice would be served in full.

As for the neighbors who had judged Andrew without knowing the truth—including Mrs. Gable—slunk back behind their chain-link fences in shame, offering sheepish apologies and baskets of fruit that Natalie politely accepted on the family's behalf.
