Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

One year later, the world looked entirely different for Andrew and Ashley.
They had moved out of the cramped rental house on the edge of town and into a bright, cheerful suburban home with a big backyard, a flourishing vegetable garden, and a golden retriever puppy named Buddy—named, of course, in honor of the stuffed toy that had stayed by Ashley’s side through the darkest hours of her life.
It was a crisp Saturday morning in late October. The autumn leaves painted the neighborhood in vibrant shades of amber, red, and gold.
In the backyard, Andrew was grilling pancakes on the patio while Ashley—now eight years old, healthy, vibrant, and bursting with laughter—played tag with her new puppy across the green lawn.
Officer Natalie and her husband Adam pulled up in the driveway, carrying a large box of housewarming pastries.
Andrew walked over to the front gate, wiping his hands on a kitchen towel, a broad, radiant smile lighting up his face.
“Hey, stranger!” Natalie greeted him warmly, handing over the box. “Hope you’re hungry.”
“Always,” Andrew laughed, pulling her into a quick, affectionate hug. “Come on in. Breakfast is almost ready.”
They sat around the wooden patio table as the morning sun warmed the crisp air. Ashley bounded over, giving Natalie a fierce hug around the waist before grabbing a plate stacked high with blueberry pancakes.
“Dad?” Ashley asked, looking up between bites with a mouth full of syrup.
“Yeah, sweetie?” Andrew smiled, wrapping a protective arm around her shoulders.
“Are we ever going back to the old house?”
Andrew looked around at the bright garden, the laughing puppy, and the safe, peaceful horizon stretching out before them. He looked at Natalie and Adam, who had stood by them when the world had turned its back.

Then he looked down at his daughter, whose eyes shone with absolute security and unconditional love.
“Never, Ashley,” Andrew said softly, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “We’re right where we belong.”
