Chapter 1: THE K9 THAT REFUSED TO MOVE

St. Alder Hospital was known for one thing—absolute silence in its old west wing.

Room 306 had been officially declared unused for over a year.

No patients.

No equipment.

No reason for anyone to go in.

That’s why the security team didn’t think much of it when they brought in Rex, a trained K9 unit used for hospital safety sweeps after a series of minor break-ins in nearby buildings.

Rex was a highly disciplined German Shepherd.

Calm.

Controlled.

Reliable.

Until he reached Room 306.

The moment he stopped outside the door, everything changed.

His body stiffened.

His ears shot forward.

And then… he froze completely.

The handler tugged gently on the leash.

“Rex, move.”

No response.

The dog wasn’t disobeying.

He was focused.

On something inside the room.

Then, without warning, Rex began barking.

Loud.

Sharp.

Aggressive.

Not like a warning bark.

Like a threat.

He scratched at the door violently, growling deep in his chest as if something inside had just moved.

“Stand down!” the handler ordered.

But Rex didn’t stop.

He kept barking at the empty room.

Nurses and staff began gathering in the hallway, confused.

“There’s nothing in there,” one nurse said. “That room hasn’t been used in months.”

But Rex disagreed.

He pressed his nose against the door seam, whining now, pacing back and forth like something inside was calling him.

Finally, the hospital supervisor arrived.

“This is ridiculous,” he muttered. “Open it. Show him it’s empty.”

The door creaked open.

The room was… empty.

Or at least, it looked empty.

No beds.

No equipment.

Just a bare floor and faded walls.

Everyone relaxed slightly.

But Rex did not.

He stepped inside slowly.

Then stopped.

Right in the center of the room.

And stared at the wall.

May you like

The barking started again.

Worse than before.
