Chapter 2 - Whispers Behind Locked Doors

The metallic click of the door lock echoed like a gunshot in the tiny, sterile room of the servants' quarters. Sophia’s back pressed against the wood, her chest heaving as she tried to quiet the frantic rhythm of her own heart. Outside, the distant, muffled echoes of the wedding guests evacuating the grand hall sounded like the rumbling of an approaching storm.
Emma stood frozen by the narrow cot, her small fingers still clutching the silver cross hanging from her neck.
“Mama?” she whispered, her lower lip trembling. “Did I do something bad? Did I make Mr. Moretti angry?”
Sophia sank to her knees, pulling her daughter into her arms with a fierce, desperate intensity. She buried her face in Emma’s soft curls, breathing in the scent of baby shampoo and dried rose petals from the courtyard garden.
“No, my sweet girl. You didn't do anything wrong,” Sophia choked out, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. “You were very brave. But you must never, ever speak of what you saw outside again. Do you understand me? Never.”
“Why?” Emma asked, her wide blue eyes searching her mother’s face. “Miss Vanessa was crying. The man in the coat said bad things.”
Sophia’s mind raced. For twelve years, she had lived within the iron-clad walls of the Moretti estate, scrubbing floors, ironing silk shirts, and learning the brutal unwritten laws of the underworld. In Alessandro Moretti’s world, secrets were currency, and knowing things you shouldn't was a death sentence. If Ryan Mercer—the man who controlled the estate’s security and intelligence network—had noticed Emma, her daughter was no longer safe.
Before Sophia could formulate a plan, a sharp, three-knock rhythm sounded on their door.
Sophia froze.
“Open up. It’s Luca.”
The voice belonged to Luca Marino, Alessandro’s oldest and most trusted enforcer. He was a man of few words, known for his unyielding loyalty and terrifying efficiency.
Sophia hesitated, then slowly turned the lock and pulled the door open an inch.
Luca stood in the narrow corridor, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his expression unreadable. He looked past Sophia to where Emma sat huddled on the bed.
“Pack a bag,” Luca said quietly, his voice devoid of menace, though his eyes scanned the hallway with practiced vigilance. “Boss wants you and the child moved to the eastern lodge immediately.”
“Mr. Moretti thinks we’re in danger?” Sophia asked, her voice shaking.
“The boss doesn't take chances,” Luca replied, stepping slightly to block the doorway from view. “And neither do I. Ten minutes, Sophia. Don't bring anything unnecessary.”
Meanwhile, in the private wing of the main house, Alessandro Moretti poured two fingers of unaged bourbon into a heavy crystal glass. He didn't drink it. He simply stared at the amber liquid as it caught the light of the crystal chandelier.
The double doors swung open, and Luca stepped inside, closing them securely behind him.
“Sophia and the girl are being relocated to the eastern lodge,” Luca reported. “My best men are stationed around the perimeter. Nobody gets in without your explicit order or mine.”
“And Ryan?” Alessandro asked, his voice chillingly calm.
“He’s in his office, reviewing the security logs from the past month,” Luca said, a cynical edge creeping into his tone. “Oddly enough, boss... the cameras covering the western garden gate—the exact gate the child described—have suffered a three-minute technical glitch four times this month. Right around midnight.”
Alessandro’s grip on the crystal glass tightened until his knuckles turned white.
“A glitch,” Alessandro repeated, the word dripping with lethal sarcasm. “In a security system worth four million dollars, installed by former military engineers.”
“That’s what the system report claims,” Luca murmured. “Ryan approved the maintenance tickets himself.”
Alessandro set the glass down with a sharp clack. He turned on his heel, his tall frame cutting an imposing silhouette against the moonlit window.
“Where is Vanessa?”

“Locked in her dressing room,” Luca said. “She hasn’t spoken a word since you brought her upstairs. She’s terrified, Alessandro. Not of you... but of what happens next.”
Alessandro walked past Luca toward the corridor. “Keep the perimeter secure. I’m going to see my bride.”
