Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

Before Ryan’s hand could graze the handle of the bottom drawer, Alessandro’s foot kicked the desk with brutal force.
The heavy oak structure slammed backward against Ryan’s knees, pinning him against the chair with a sharp crunch of wood against drywall. Ryan gasped, clutching his bruised legs as the banker’s lamp tipped over, plunging the desk into deep, dramatic shadows.
“Don’t even think about it,” Alessandro warned, his voice steady and cold as winter ice.
From the doorway, Luca Marino stepped into the room, holding Ryan’s Sig Sauer pistol in one hand and a black zip-tie in the other. Luca didn't waste words. He hauled Ryan out of the chair, forced him onto his knees against the concrete floor, and bound his hands tightly behind his back.
Ryan spat a drop of blood onto the floor, his eyes blazing with venom.
“You think you’ve won, Alessandro?” Ryan sneered, his breath coming in ragged gasps. “You think getting rid of me stops the storm? The New York Syndicate already has copies of your shipping manifests. By morning, federal indictments will be landing on your desk. You’re playing emperor while your kingdom burns to the ground.”
Alessandro looked down at his former adviser with profound pity.
“You always did overestimate your own importance, Ryan,” Alessandro said calmly. “You assumed I didn't know about the New York Syndicate’s interest in our shipping lines. I fed you those fake manifests three weeks ago. Every ship carrying contraband tonight is already safely docked in neutral waters. The only thing you’ve successfully delivered to New York is a one-way ticket to a federal prison for yourself.”
Ryan’s face twisted in horror. “You... you set a trap.”
“I gave you enough rope to hang yourself,” Alessandro corrected. He turned to Luca. “Take him down to the lower armory. Keep him secure until dawn. I want a full ledger of every contact he made within our organization.”
“With pleasure, boss,” Luca grinned darkly, hauling Ryan up by his collar and dragging him out of the room.
As the heavy steel door slammed shut behind Luca, Alessandro stood alone in the dim office. He exhaled a long, steady breath, feeling the tension of the past twenty-four hours finally begin to drain from his shoulders.
The betrayal had been unmasked. The cancer inside his organization had been excised.
Now, there was only one thing left to address.
Up in the eastern lodge, Sophia sat at a small wooden table, staring out the window at the dense pine forest surrounding the estate. Emma was fast asleep on the narrow guest bed, clutching Mr. Bear and her silver cross, completely exhausted by the drama of the day.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Sophia stood up immediately, her heart fluttering. She walked over and unlocked the heavy wooden door.
Alessandro Moretti stood on the porch, illuminated by the soft amber glow of the outdoor lantern. He looked tired, the silver at his temples catching the light, but the terrifying aura that usually surrounded him was entirely gone.
“Mr. Moretti,” Sophia breathed, stepping aside. “Is... is everything alright? Is Emma in trouble?”
“No, Sophia,” Alessandro said gently, stepping inside and keeping his voice low so as not to wake the sleeping child. “Emma is safe. And the danger that brought you here tonight has been removed permanently.”
Sophia clasped her hands together in front of her gray apron. “What will happen to Miss Vanessa?”
“Vanessa made a mistake under duress,” Alessandro replied, his tone firm. “She protected her brother when she had nowhere else to turn. But she stood by me when the truth came out. We have some things to work through, but she is under my protection. Always.”
He looked over at Emma sleeping peacefully on the bed, then back to Sophia.
“For twelve years, Sophia, you have worked in my house with quiet dignity. You raised your daughter within these walls, and tonight, that little girl’s courage saved my life and my empire. I owe you a debt that cannot be paid with a paycheck.”
Tears welled in Sophia’s eyes. “I only wanted to protect my child, sir.”
“You did,” Alessandro said. “And from now on, you and Emma will never have to worry about rent, safety, or uncertainty again. I am appointing you head of household operations for the entire Moretti estate. You will have a home here for as long as you wish.”
May you like
Sophia covered her mouth with her trembling hand, bowing her head. “Thank you, Mr. Moretti. Thank you.”
Alessandro nodded once, turned, and walked out into the cool night air, leaving the eastern lodge bathed in peace.
