Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The morning sun broke over the Atlantic, washing the Moretti estate in brilliant sheets of golden light. The white roses adorning the grand hall archway still shimmered with morning dew, untouched by the chaos that had nearly torn the family apart the day before.

In the private sitting room, Vanessa Hale stood by the window, wearing a simple cream-colored silk dress. Her hands were steady. For the first time in six months, the suffocating weight of blackmail and terror had been lifted entirely from her shoulders.

The door opened softly.

Alessandro walked in, holding a steaming cup of black coffee. He handed it to her, watching her face with a quiet, reassuring warmth.

“Julian is on a train heading back to Chicago,” Alessandro said softly. “His debts have been settled—using funds recovered from Ryan Mercer’s offshore accounts. He’s safe, Vanessa. He’ll finish his degree, and he’ll never be bothered by those men again.”

Vanessa looked up at him, tears welling in her eyes, but this time they were tears of profound gratitude and relief.

“You didn't have to save him, Alessandro,” she whispered. “After everything I did... after how I betrayed your trust...”

“You were protecting your family,” Alessandro interrupted gently, placing his hand over hers. “In my world, family is everything. The only mistake you made was not trusting that I would protect you, too.”

Vanessa stepped closer, wrapping her arms around his waist and burying her face against his chest. Alessandro wrapped his strong arms around her, holding her tightly, knowing that the foundation they had built today was stronger than any stone fortress.

“What happens now?” she asked against his shirt.

“Now,” Alessandro smiled, kissing the top of her head, “we finish what we started yesterday.”
