Chapter 2 - The Path of Whispers

The journey to Oakhaven wasn't merely a walk across the city; it was a descent into a forgotten pocket of Chicago. The key in Noah’s hand grew hotter with every block, acting as a compass. Hannah, fueled by a desperation that bypassed exhaustion, followed her son through back alleys and abandoned transit lines, the city’s indifference falling away to reveal a side of the metropolis that wasn't on any map.
As they reached the edge of the historic district, the urban noise faded. The air here was still, charged with the static of something old and waiting. Hannah began to recall stories her grandmother had whispered—legends of a lineage tied to the land, a family that had been driven out by greed, and a house that was said to be a sanctuary for those who had nothing left.
The house on Oakhaven rose out of the mist like a monolith. It wasn't the broken-down ruin Hannah expected; it was a sprawling, Gothic estate that seemed to vibrate with a soft, bioluminescent light. The front door, massive and carved with symbols of protection, had a single, ancient keyhole.

"Mom, he said we had to make it before midnight," Noah urged, his voice frantic.
The clock tower in the distance began to chime the first note of twelve. Hannah’s hands were shaking so violently she couldn't grip the key. She saw the snow turning to ice, felt the cold biting into her bone marrow, and realized that Blake’s betrayal was merely the catalyst for a much larger, darker destiny. Just as the twelfth chime resonated, Hannah jammed the key into the lock. The house sighed—a long, deep sound of wood and stone exhaling—and the door swung open, welcoming them into a warmth that tasted like cinnamon and home.
