Chapter 5 - The Winter’s Toll

The confrontation didn't happen in a courtroom. It happened at the one-year anniversary of the night they were thrown out. Blake had tried to buy Oakhaven, convinced that his bad luck resided in the property. He showed up at the gates with lawyers and demolition crews, his face red with a rage that had consumed his every waking hour.

He didn't find a broken woman. He found Hannah, standing at the door of Oakhaven, flanked by a community of people who had been restored by her grace.

"You think you can take this?" Blake screamed, his voice cracking. "I have the law, the money, the power!"

Hannah didn't raise her voice. She simply looked at him, and for the first time, he saw the "whispers"—a swirling, dark vortex of his own failures manifested around him. The ground beneath him seemed to shake, not with an earthquake, but with the collective weight of his own misdeeds. He realized then that he hadn't just betrayed a woman; he had betrayed the balance of the city.

He didn't just lose the house. He lost his sanity as the weight of his own lies shattered his world. He fled, leaving behind a trail of ruin that he would spend the rest of his life cleaning up, but he never laid eyes on Hannah or Noah again.
