Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark
Inside the pitch-black, heavily fortified panic room, the air was dense and cold, smelling faintly of ozone, tactical gear, and old dust. Overhead, emergency red LED strips cast a dim, eerie crimson glow over rows of surveillance monitors, communication arrays crates of supplies. Charlie was shaking violently, hot tears streaming down his silent cheeks as the heavy, concussive thuds of combat vibrated directly through the reinforced concrete walls.
Audrey pulled the terrified boy tightly against her chest, burying her own mounting panic deep down for his sake. She forced her hands to move with deliberate, calming stability in the red-tinted gloom.
“Look at me, Charlie. Look at my hands right now,” she signed, her fingers steady despite her racing pulse.
The boy’s wide, terrified eyes locked onto hers, desperately seeking safety.
“We are safe. Your father is the strongest, bravest man I know. He will protect us. Right now, I need you to breathe with me. Match my rhythm.”
She exaggerated her breathing pattern, inhaling deeply through her nose and exhaling slowly through her mouth. Charlie mirrored her, his frantic pulse gradually slowing down as the gunfire outside the reinforced door muffled into sporadic, distant pops and shouts.
Suddenly, a heavy, metallic thud struck the outer steel door of the panic room, followed by a harsh, scraping sound. Someone was working a manual override on the digital keypad.

Charlie clutched Audrey’s jacket so hard his knuckles turned white, panic flaring anew in his eyes. Audrey’s gaze dropped to the heavy tactical baton Maxwell had left resting against the supply crate near the door. Wrapping her hand around the rubberized grip, she positioned herself squarely between the entrance and the young boy, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She was ready to lay down her life for a child who had taught her the true meaning of courage.
The digital keypad beeped a sharp green. The heavy steel door began to slowly swing inward.
