Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

The heavy door swung fully open, but the figure stepping into the dim red glow of the panic room was not an assassin. It was Maxwell Gallow.
His Italian-tailored suit was scorched, stained with soot and dark splatters of blood—none of it belonging to him. In his right hand, he held a heavy tactical firearm, his broad chest heaving heavily with residual adrenaline. As his eyes adjusted to the dim light and he caught sight of Audrey standing protectively in front of Charlie with a raised baton, a profound, tectonic shift occurred within the mafia boss. The cold, ruthless predator vanished entirely, replaced by a father overwhelmed with fierce, overwhelming gratitude.
“It’s over,” Maxwell breathed, his voice cracking slightly as he holstered his weapon and dropped straight to his knees, pulling his son into a desperate, crushing embrace. “The threat has been completely neutralized.”
Two days later, the violent fallout of the Moretti attack had completely reshaped the underworld landscape of San Francisco. Maxwell had dismantled his rivals with surgical, ruthless efficiency, ensuring that no shadow would ever dare fall across Charlie’s path again. Yet, the attack left an undeniable scar: staying in the city was no longer an option if they wanted true peace.
Maxwell summoned Audrey to his private study. A private jet charter itinerary lay open on his polished mahogany desk.
“We are leaving for our private estate nestled deep within the Swiss Alps,” Maxwell stated flatly, his tone resolute. “You are coming with us as Charlie’s permanent guardian, tutor, and companion. Name your price, Audrey. Whatever you require is yours.”
Audrey stared down at the documents, her mind racing at breakneck speed. Leaving San Francisco meant abandoning her nursing school ambitions, her local friendships, and every familiar landmark of her old life. But as she looked toward the doorway, she saw Charlie standing there, his small hands signing a silent, desperate plea: Please come with us. She realized then that her home was no longer a physical city on a map; it was wherever these two fractured souls needed her light.

“I’ll come,” Audrey said softly, a quiet smile gracing her lips. “On one condition: Maya comes with us, and her ongoing medical care and education are fully integrated into your network.”
Maxwell smiled—a genuine, warm, unguarding smile that finally reached his deep blue eyes. “Done.”
