Chapter 3 - Cutting the Lifeline

At 6:00 AM the following morning, I met my attorney, Marcus Vance, in his high-rise office downtown. Marcus had been my close friend since college, specializing in high-stakes corporate law and criminal litigation.

I set the external hard drive and the blue sewing box on his mahogany desk.

"I need an emergency domestic violence restraining order, a petition for immediate divorce with cause, and a full freeze on every joint asset, credit line, and trust account bearing her name," I said, my voice deadpan and devoid of emotion.

Marcus plugged the drive into his computer and opened one of the compiled video files. Within ten seconds, his face hardened into a mask of pure disgust.

"Ryder... this is demonic," Marcus whispered, turning off the monitor. "Elder abuse, felony assault, embezzlement, false imprisonment. She’s not just looking at a divorce court. She’s looking at state prison."

"Make sure she doesn't get a dime," I said. "Every account where my salary was deposited is under my primary name. Cut her credit cards right now. Revoke her access to the country club, cancel the lease on her Mercedes, and file an emergency injunction to lock her out of this house permanently."

"Consider it done," Marcus said, pulling out his phone to call the district judge. "What about the maid? Jade?"

"She’s currently at the hospital with my mother," I said. "Jade saved my mother's life. I'm hiring a private legal team to secure her permanent residency visa so Allison can never use her immigration status as leverage."

By noon, the financial trap was snapped shut.

My phone exploded with calls and frantic text messages from Allison. She was still at the hospital's waiting room, trying to act like a concerned wife while officers were finishing their preliminary report.

Ryder! My card was declined at the pharmacy! What is going on?! Answer your phone! You can't do this to me! I'm your wife! If you don't call me back in five minutes, I'm calling my lawyer and taking half of everything you own!

I replied with a single, short text message:

Meet me at the house at 3:00 PM. We will discuss your future.

When I returned home, I didn't wait alone. Sitting in my living room were Detective Miller from the domestic violence unit, two uniformed police officers, and Marcus Vance.

At 2:58 PM, a taxi pulled up to the driveway. Allison stepped out, her designer sunglasses pushed up on her head, her face flushed with anger. She marched through the front door, slamming it shut behind her.

"What is the meaning of this childish behavior, Ryder?!" she shouted, stomping into the hallway. "Freezing my cards? Changing the security codes on the garage? Do you have any idea how embarrassed I was when—"

She stopped dead in her tracks as she walked into the living room and saw the two uniformed officers standing beside the fireplace.

"What... what is this?" she stammered, her face losing its color.

"Sit down, Allison," I said quietly from behind the desk. "We have a few videos we’d like to watch together."
