Chapter 4 - The Screen Goes Black

Allison tried to recover her composure, tossing her hair back with a bitter, practiced laugh.

"Is this about yesterday?" she asked, turning to Detective Miller with an air of delicate innocence. "Officer, my husband has been deployed overseas for eight months. He doesn't understand the severe psychological strain I’ve been under taking care of a senile, combative woman. I had to use physical discipline once because she was throwing things at the housemaid!"

"Is that right?" Detective Miller asked coldly, tapping a remote control on the coffee table.

The 75-inch television screen on the wall chimed as it powered on.

The video began to play. The audio rang out through the living room with crisp, high-definition clarity.

“You stupid old bat!” Allison’s voice screeched from the speakers. On screen, three weeks prior, Allison could be seen dragging my mother by her thin hair across the dining room rug because Mom had spilled a glass of water.

“Please, Allison... no more...” my mother’s voice whimpered on the recording.

“Shut up!” Allison screamed on the video, slapping my mother across the face before turning to Jade, who was desperately trying to pull her away. “And you! You tell Ryder a single word, and I’ll tell the authorities you stole my diamond necklace and have you deported in chains!”

In the living room, the silence was suffocating.

Allison stood frozen, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. Her hands began to shake violently.

"No..." she whispered, taking a step back toward the foyer. "No, that's... that's edited. That's AI! He forged that!"

"The footage is timestamped, cryptographically verified, and backed up on an off-site industrial server, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, stepping forward with a stack of legal papers. "And these are bank statements showing forty-two thousand dollars stolen from Eleanor’s account, alongside pawn shop receipts bearing your signature."

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt.

"Allison Vance, you are under arrest for felony elder abuse, aggravated assault, grand larceny, and corporate fraud."

"Ryder! No! Tell them to stop!" Allison shrieked, backing into the wall as the officers grabbed her wrists. She began to cry hysterically, her polished facade completely shattering into pathetic panic. "I did it for us! I was stressed! I love you, Ryder! Please! Don't do this to me!"

"You didn't do it for us," I said, stepping right up to her, looking down into her terrified eyes. "You did it because you're a sadistic leech. And you will never touch my family again."

The officers pulled her arms behind her back and snapped the handcuffs tightly around her wrists.

As they dragged her weeping and screaming out the front door into the back of a marked police cruiser, neighbors gathered on their lawns, pointing and taking photos with their phones.

I stood on the porch, watching the police car drive away until its taillights disappeared around the corner.

For the first time in eight months, I took a deep, clean breath. But the fight was far from over.
