Chapter 6 - The Trial

Six months later, the Maricopa County Superior Courthouse was packed for the trial of State of Arizona v. Allison Vance.
Allison sat at the defense table dressed in a plain grey jail jumpsuit, her hair tied back in an unkempt ponytail, her hands cuffed at the waist. Her high-priced defense attorney had tried every legal trick in the book to suppress the surveillance footage, claiming it violated her privacy rights inside her own home.
The judge dismissed every single motion within ten minutes.
I sat in the front row of the gallery alongside my mother, who sat proudly in her wheelchair, her hand resting warmly over Jade’s hand.
The prosecutor, a sharp woman named Prosecutor Hayes, called her first key witness to the stand: Jade.
Jade walked up to the witness box with her head held high. She wore a simple navy blue dress, her posture straight and graceful.
When the defense attorney attempted to badger her, insinuating that she was making up stories to steal money from the family, Jade remained completely calm.
"I kept the sewing box log because Mrs. Eleanor couldn't speak for herself," Jade testified firmly, her voice echoing clearly across the courtroom. "Every bruise had a date. Every stolen ring had a receipt. I did not care about money. I cared about keeping a human being alive."
A soft hum of admiration passed through the jury.
Next, Prosecutor Hayes played the master compilation of the hidden industrial camera footage on the large screens facing the jury box.
For forty-five minutes, the courtroom was forced to watch the raw, unedited reality of Allison’s cruelty—the starvations, the verbal abuse, the physical violence, and the ultimate moment when Jade threw her own body over my mother while Allison swung a heavy wooden spoon like a club.
Several jurors wept openly. Two turned their heads away in disgust.
When the video finished, Prosecutor Hayes turned to the jury. "The defense claims caregiver burnout. The evidence proves systematic, sadistic torture for financial gain."
The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
When they returned, the foreperson delivered the verdict: Guilty on all counts.
Felony Elder Abuse: Guilty.
Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon: Guilty.
Grand Larceny and Embezzlement: Guilty.
Judge Robert Sterling looked down at Allison with cold contempt before reading her sentence.
"Mrs. Vance, your conduct was a masterclass in human wickedness. You preyed upon a vulnerable mother and exploited a brave young worker, believing your position gave you immunity."
He slammed his gavel down.
"I sentence you to fourteen years in state prison without the possibility of early parole, alongside full financial restitution to Eleanor Vance and Jade Ramirez."

Allison burst into hysterical screams as bailiffs grabbed her arms and dragged her through the side door toward the holding cells.
As she was pulled away, she caught a glimpse of me standing beside my mother and Jade. I didn't say a word. I simply looked at her with absolute indifference, turning my back as the iron doors slammed shut forever.
