Chapter 3 - The Trust's Secret Teeth

David Sloan stepped up onto the porch, his silver hair neatly combed, his sharp gray suit completely unruffled despite the freezing mountain wind. He looked at Evelyn and Natalie with the cold, detached professionalism of an attorney who had spent forty years burying greedy relatives in legal quicksand.
Evelyn stared at him, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "David? What are you doing here? This is a family matter! Tell these incompetent officers to leave!"
David didn't even blink. He opened his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder embossed with the official seal of the state bar, and held it up.
"Evelyn, under the final, legally binding provisions of Arthur Miller’s will and testament, executed twelve days before his passing two years ago, this estate—including every acre of land, every building, and every asset contained within—was placed into an irrevocable trust," David announced, his voice carrying clearly across the front lawn.
Natalie paled, stepping back into the doorway. "That's impossible! Dad told us the house would pass to Mom!"
"Your father told you what was necessary to keep peace in the house while he was fighting his final battle with illness," David corrected smoothly, flipping open the first page of the document. "Arthur knew your spending habits, Natalie. And he knew Evelyn’s ambition. That is why he structured the trust so that the sole protected beneficiary is Claire Miller. And the sole managing trustee with absolute legal authority over the property is Ethan."
Evelyn’s face drained of all color, leaving her looking remarkably old and fragile beneath the porch light. "No... no, Arthur wouldn't do that. We are his family!"
"And Claire is my wife," I stepped in, my voice dropping an octave lower. "A wife you terrorized, starved of basic dignity, and left to freeze in the snow because you wanted to steal what didn't belong to you."
Officer Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Evelyn Miller, Natalie Miller, you are under arrest for domestic abuse, coercion, and trespassing upon property legally managed by a designated trustee. Turn around and put your hands behind your backs."
"You can't do this!" Natalie shrieked, tears of pure rage springing to her eyes as the cuffs clicked around her wrists. "Ethan! You're destroying your own family over a stranger! She's a nobody!"
"She is everything you could never hope to be," I said coldly as Vance and his junior officer led them down the steps toward the patrol cars. "And as of right now, you are legally barred from ever stepping foot on this property again."
As the patrol cars reversed down the snowy driveway with their sirens silent but their red lights flashing, I let out a long, slow breath. The weight of the past two years didn't vanish, but for the first time since I came home, the air felt clean.
David Sloan closed his briefcase and looked at me. "How is Claire, Ethan?"

"She's at St. Jude's hospital," I replied, grabbing my duffel bag from the truck. "I'm heading there now. David, I want every single lock on this house changed by sunrise. And I want a full forensic audit of every bank account my mother and sister touched over the last twenty-four months."
"It's already in motion," David said, offering a rare, approving smile. "Welcome home, Captain. Let's go take care of your wife."
