Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the mountain spring arrived in a brilliant explosion of emerald green pines, blossoming wildflowers, and rushing streams fed by the last traces of winter snow.
The legal proceedings had reached their final, definitive conclusion.
Evelyn and Natalie Miller had entered guilty pleas to multiple felony counts of fraud, coercion, and elder abuse under federal and state sentencing guidelines. Evelyn received a twelve-year sentence in a federal women’s correctional facility in upstate New York, while Natalie received ten years. Their appeals were summarily dismissed by the district court, and all remaining personal assets were permanently seized to pay restitution to the trust and cover legal fees.
Julian Vance and his syndicate front companies in the Pacific Northwest were thoroughly dismantled by federal RICO indictments, permanently ending the financial threat that had hovered in the background.

My military service was officially behind me, honorably completed with my discharge papers safely locked away in my desk drawer. My new mission was simple, profound, and permanent: building a life of absolute peace, security, and unwavering devotion with the woman who had survived the worst winter of our lives.
The heavy front door opened behind me, and Claire stepped out onto the porch, wiping a little dark soil from her hands onto a gardening apron and smiling up at me with eyes full of sunlight.
"Penny for your thoughts, Captain," she teased gently.
I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her close against my chest as I looked out over our land, our home, and our future.
May you like
"I was just thinking," I murmured, resting my chin on her shoulder, "that some winters are brutal... but the spring they bring is worth fighting every battle to see."
Claire leaned back into my embrace, kissing my cheek as the morning sun washed over the mountain in a wave of golden light.
