Chapter 5 - Forged in Greed

By noon, the hospital room had quieted down. Claire’s eyelids fluttered open, her soft brown eyes focusing on me with a sudden, bewildered intensity.
"Ethan?" she whispered, her voice raspy from the cold.
I immediately leaned over, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead. "I'm right here, sweetheart. I'm not going anywhere."
Tears welled up in her eyes as the memories of the previous day rushed back. "I tried... I tried to stop them, Ethan. Your mother said the house belonged to them now. They took my phone, they locked me in the guest room for two days, and when I refused to sign those papers... they dragged me outside."
"I know, Claire. I saw them," I said, holding her hand tightly. "You never have to worry about them ever again. They are gone. The house is secure, and they are facing criminal charges."
Claire let out a shuddering sob of relief, burying her face against my shoulder as I wrapped my arms around her. "I thought I was going to die out there in the snow, Ethan. I kept thinking about your letters... about how you were supposed to come home to a real life with me."
"I am home," I whispered fiercely against her hair. "And we are going to build that life. Better than before."
Later that afternoon, after Claire had fallen back into a healing sleep, I met David Sloan in the hospital cafeteria to review the final audit reports.
"The police have secured the house," David reported, handing me a fresh set of security footage flash drives retrieved from the estate's master server. "The locksmith finished clearing out your mother and sister's bedrooms an hour ago. All their designer clothes, jewelry, and personal items are boxed up in climate-controlled storage units paid for by the trust for thirty days. After that, it goes to charity."
I plugged one of the flash drives into my tactical tablet, pulling up the surveillance footage from the living room dating back to the week before I returned.
What I saw made my blood run cold.
On the screen, my mother Evelyn stood over Claire, who was sitting at the dining room table looking pale and exhausted. Evelyn slammed a pen down onto a stack of legal papers.
“Sign it, Claire!” Evelyn snarled on the audio recording. “Ethan is thousands of miles away fighting a war he might not even survive! You have no rights to this property! If you don't sign these deed transfers right now, I’ll make sure you’re thrown out onto the street with the clothes on your back!”
Claire shook her head weakly. “This house belongs to Ethan and me. Arthur wanted it this way.”
“Arthur was senile when he signed that stupid trust!” Natalie shouted, marching into the frame and ripping a necklace off Claire’s neck—a gold locket my grandfather had given her on our wedding day. “You’re a parasite draining our family name! Sign the papers, or we’ll make sure you never see a dime of support!”
I stared at the tablet screen, the knuckles of my right hand turning white as I gripped the edge of the metal table.
They didn't just neglect her. They robbed her, bullied her, and tormented her every single day while smiling for the neighbors.
"David," I said, my voice unnervingly calm.
"Yes, Ethan?"
May you like
"I want to press every single criminal charge available under state and federal law," I said, looking up from the screen with eyes cold as ice. "Not just for the abuse and the false imprisonment. I want federal wire fraud and forgery charges added for the stolen inheritance funds."
David nodded slowly, a grim smile touching his lips. "Consider it done. Your mother and sister wanted to play high-society criminals. Let's see how they like federal prison."
