Chapter 3 - The Hospital Audit

The paramedics carefully brought my mother down the stairs on a soft transport chair, wrapped in a warm heated blanket. As they rolled her past Julian and Chloe, my mother kept her eyes fixed straight ahead, clutching my hand with surprising strength.
"Elena, you can't do this!" Chloe shrieked from the living room, where two sheriff’s deputies were standing over her, preventing her from touching her handbag or laptop. "We have Power of Attorney! We have legal documentation!"
"Your Power of Attorney was suspended forty-five minutes ago by judicial decree, Mrs. Vance," Director Jenkins of APS informed her, holding up a certified court seal. "And based on the preliminary photographic evidence submitted by the Assistant Attorney General, you are under active criminal investigation."
"Elena! Talk to me!" Julian yelled as a deputy guided him toward the front porch. "We’re family! You’re destroying this family over a misunderstanding!"
"You destroyed this family when you tied our mother to a bed, Julian," I said coldly, walking out the door beside the gurney without looking back.
Forty minutes later, we arrived at Saint Jude Medical Center’s specialized trauma wing.
Under the direct order of the State Attorney General’s Office, my mother was admitted into a secure VIP isolation room under an assumed name to prevent Julian or his lawyers from interfering. Two state troopers were posted outside her door.
Dr. Aris, a renowned forensic pathologist and elder abuse specialist, conducted a comprehensive physical examination. I stood in the corner of the room, my stomach turning as the harsh medical lamps illuminated the full extent of the horrors my mother had endured.
"Look here," Dr. Aris pointed out, using a soft digital stylus to document the marks on his tablet screen. "These ring-shaped hematomas on her wrists aren't from simple cloth ties. These are ligature marks from heavy-duty nylon rope. The tissue necrosis suggests she was restrained for periods exceeding twelve hours at a time."
My hands clenched into tight fists inside my coat pockets. "And the ribs?"
"Three healed rib fractures on her left side, approximately six weeks old," Dr. Aris said grimly, pulling down the digital X-ray scan onto the wall monitor. "Plus acute soft-tissue trauma across her lower back consistent with blunt force impacts. She was also suffering from severe clinical dehydration and stage-two malnutrition. If she had remained in that house for another two weeks, her kidneys would have failed completely."
My mother lay on the elevated hospital bed, her face clean, wearing soft cotton hospital gowns. With fresh fluids running through her IV line and proper pain medication in her system, the terrified haze in her eyes was beginning to lift.
"Elena?" she called out softly, her voice weak but clear.
I walked over immediately, sitting on the edge of the bed and holding her hand. "I’m right here, Mom. You’re safe. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
"Julian..." she whispered, a tear slipping down her hollow cheek. "He took my wedding ring, Elena. He said if I didn't sign the transfer paper for the cabin, he’d sell it to a pawn shop."
"We’re going to get it back, Mom," I promised her, kissing her knuckles. "Every single dime. Every piece of jewelry. Every memory they tried to steal from you."
Dr. Aris stepped out to finalize his forensic affidavit—a document that would serve as the cornerstone of the state's criminal indictment.
Just then, my phone chimed with an encrypted incoming call from Marcus Vance, the lead forensic accountant for the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
"Elena," Marcus said, his tone urgent as paper shuffled over the line. "We just initiated the preliminary financial freeze on Julian and Chloe’s secondary accounts. You need to see what we just uncovered."
"What is it?" I asked, stepping toward the window.
"The lake cabin wasn't sold to a third-party investor group," Marcus revealed. "Julian transferred the deed to a shell corporation called Apex Holdings LLC for a total purchase price of ten dollars. And guess who the sole managing director of Apex Holdings is?"
"Chloe," I guessed, my eyes narrowing.
"Her younger brother, Ethan," Marcus corrected. "They laundered the title through a fake foreclosure, took out a six-hundred-thousand-dollar equity mortgage against the property yesterday afternoon, and wired four hundred thousand dollars of it directly to a private wealth account in the Cayman Islands."

I took a slow, deep breath, feeling a razor-sharp clarity settle over my mind.
"Trace the wire, Marcus," I ordered smoothly. "They think they played a clever shell game. Let's show them what happens when the State opens the box."
