Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Medical Center

By noon, desperate and facing total financial ruin, Julian and Chloe resorted to their final, messy ploy.
They hired Donald Vance—a sleazy, high-priced criminal defense lawyer known for using aggressive media tactics—and marched directly to Saint Jude Medical Center. They brought along a local news camera crew they had tipped off, aiming to create a public spectacle and accuse the Attorney General’s Office of "government overreach" and "elderly kidnapping."
I was sitting in the hospital lobby holding a cup of black coffee when the glass sliding doors burst open.
Julian walked in flanked by Chloe, their lawyer Donald Vance, and a cameraman with a shoulder-mounted lens flashing its red recording light.
"There she is!" Donald Vance announced loudly, pointing a finger at me as the camera swung in my direction. "Elena Vance! Assistant Attorney General! Using state resources to hold her frail, confused seventy-eight-year-old mother hostage against the wishes of her legal primary caregiver!"
The hospital security guards immediately moved forward to block the camera, but I held up a single hand, signaling them to stand down.
I stood up from my chair, keeping my posture straight, my face completely impassive as the camera zoomed in on my face.
"Elena!" Julian shouted, stepping forward with fake, theatrical tears in his eyes. "Where is Mom?! You have no right to keep her from us! She has dementia! She doesn't know what she’s saying! You’re manipulating her because you want control of her estate!"
Chloe chimed in, looking directly into the news lens with an expression of aggrieved martyrdom. "We sacrificed our lives for that woman! We nursed her! And Elena shows up after months of absence and uses police officers to tear our family apart!"
Donald Vance stepped into my personal space, shoving a legal folder toward my chest. "Miss Vance, we are serving you with an immediate petition for a Writ of Habeas Corpus. My clients demand immediate physical access to Margaret Vance for a independent psychiatric evaluation!"
I didn't take the folder. I didn't raise my voice. I simply looked Donald Vance dead in the eye, then turned my gaze to the camera lens.
"Are you finished?" I asked quietly.
Donald Vance blinked, caught off guard by my absolute lack of panic. "We... we demand to see the patient!"
"Detective Miller," I called out softly toward the side hallway.
Detective Miller stepped into the lobby, accompanied by two uniformed state troopers and Dr. Aris holding a thick, leather-bound medical dossier.
"Before you continue your media performance, Mr. Vance," I said, addressing the lawyer while looking directly at the camera, "you might want to review the certified evidence we just submitted to the Grand Jury thirty minutes ago."
Dr. Aris opened the dossier, displaying three massive, high-definition 4K prints mounted on display boards.
The lobby went dead silent.
The first photograph showed my mother’s shoulders and back—covered in deep, black-and-purple contusions.
The second photograph was a close-up of her wrists, clearly showing the raw, bloody lacerations left by heavy nylon rope.
The third photograph was a high-resolution scan of a forged power-of-attorney document, complete with a forensic handwriting analysis showing that Chloe had signed my mother’s name using a blue ballpoint pen while my mother was sedated.
The news cameraman lowered his camera by two inches, his jaw dropping in shock as he zoomed in on the horrific injuries displayed on the boards.
"These injuries," Dr. Aris announced loudly so every person in the lobby could hear, "were inflicted over a sustained period of six months. They include three broken ribs, systemic malnutrition, and clear evidence of physical restraint using industrial rope. The victim was found locked in a dark room wearing a heavy wool coat to conceal these wounds from the public."
Donald Vance stared at the photographs, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He turned slowly to look at Julian and Chloe, his face turning an angry shade of red.
"You... you told me she was just claiming neglect..." Donald Vance muttered to Julian under his breath, stepping away from his own clients.
"It’s fake!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate shriek. "She made those marks herself! She’s crazy!"
"Forensic skin tissue analysis proves those ligature marks were applied from behind while the victim was tied to a bedpost, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller interjected smoothly, stepping forward with two sets of steel handcuffs.
"Julian Vance, Chloe Vance," Detective Miller said, his voice echoing off the high marble ceiling of the hospital lobby. "You are under arrest for first-degree felony elder abuse, kidnapping, grand larceny, wire fraud, and falsification of legal records."
Before Julian could even turn to run toward the exit, two state troopers grabbed his arms, forcing him down onto his knees on the polished floor.

Chloe let out a piercing scream as the steel cuffs clicked tightly around her manicured wrists.
The news camera, which Julian had brought to destroy my reputation, captured every single second of their humiliating arrest in crystal-clear, high-definition detail.
