Chapter 7 - Stripped Bare

Two weeks later, the civil asset forfeiture hearing convened in the High Court of Common Pleas.

Julian and Chloe stood at the defense table wearing bright orange county jail jumpsuits. Their hands were chained at their waists, their hair unkempt, stripped of their designer suits, diamond earrings, and polished arrogance.

Sitting at the prosecution table, I sat beside Special Prosecutor Arthur Vance (no relation), who had been assigned to handle the state’s financial reclamation suit.

Judge Thorne presided over the bench, looking down over her glasses at the defense counsel with icy disdain.

"Mr. Defense Attorney," Judge Thorne said, tapping her gavel once. "Your clients are facing fourteen federal and state felony counts. Today’s hearing is strictly regarding the immediate freeze, seizure, and restitution of assets belonging to the victim, Margaret Vance."

Julian’s public defender stood up nervously. "Your Honor, my clients request that a portion of their frozen assets be released to secure private legal defense—"

"Denied," Judge Thorne interjected instantly without hesitation. "The evidence presented by the State proves that one hundred percent of the funds in the defendants' accounts were directly derived from the fraudulent liquidation of Margaret Vance’s retirement funds, the illegal mortgage on her lake cabin, and the unauthorized sale of her personal property."

Judge Thorne signed a series of thick legal decrees on her desk.

"By order of this court," Judge Thorne read loudly, "the transfer of the lake cabin property to Apex Holdings LLC is declared null and void due to gross fraud. Full, unencumbered title is hereby restored to Margaret Vance."

Chloe let out a soft, whimpering sob, collapsing back into her chair as the metal chains clinked against her orange jumpsuit.

"Furthermore," Judge Thorne continued, "all personal property acquired by Julian and Chloe Vance over the last thirty-six months—including two luxury vehicles, high-value jewelry, and their private residential equity—is seized under the State Civil Forfeiture Act. These assets will be liquidated immediately to replenish Margaret Vance’s drained investment accounts, with full interest and legal damages."

Judge Thorne struck her wooden gavel with a loud, final CRACK.

"The defendants will remain held without bail pending their criminal trial on September 14th. Court is adjourned."

As the bailiffs pulled Julian and Chloe toward the heavy steel holding doors, Julian turned his head, looking at me with wide, bloodshot eyes.

"Elena..." he rasped, his voice trembling with pathetic desperation. "Elena, please... talk to Mom... tell her I’m sorry... I’m her son!"

I stood up from the prosecution table, smoothing my jacket. I looked at my brother—the man who had traded his mother’s blood for a luxury car and a polished lie.

"She has no son, Julian," I said calmly. "She only has a daughter."
