Chapter 5 - The Family Meeting at the Hospital

Back at Westbridge General Hospital, my mother was resting comfortably in a private VIP recovery suite secured by state troopers, when the door swung open.

Arthur stood in the doorway.

He looked smaller than he had hours earlier. The expensive tailored suits and corporate confidence he usually wore like armor had evaporated, leaving behind the jittery, desperate posture of a man whose world had collapsed.

He took two tentative steps into the room.

“Mom...” he whispered, his voice cracking.

My mother opened her eyes. She didn't shout. She didn't cry. She simply looked at her son with a quiet, devastating disappointment that hurt far worse than any physical blow.

“Don't call me Mom, Arthur,” she said softly, her voice raspy. “Not after you stood there and watched her hit me. Not after you let them put handcuffs on me and call me crazy.”

Arthur rushed forward, falling to his knees beside the hospital bed, reaching out to grab her blanket. “I panicked! Mom, you don't understand! Brooke’s family... her father holds the primary commercial leases for my firm! If we crossed them, if we didn't protect her story, I would have lost my job, my home, everything!”

“So you sacrificed your own mother instead?” I stepped out from the adjoining private bathroom, my voice cutting through his pathetic excuses like a sheet of plate glass.

Arthur flinched, looking up at me with eyes filled with sudden, defensive fury. “Clara! This is all your fault! You just had to come in here and wave your government title around like a dictator! If you had just stayed out of it, we could have handled this quietly within the family!”

“Handled what quietly?” I stepped closer, looking down at my brother with absolute contempt. “Covering up a felony? Framing an innocent woman for mental instability so your wife could escape prison time? That isn't a family dispute, Arthur. That’s a criminal conspiracy.”

“She’s my wife!” Arthur shouted, scrambling to his feet.

“And Helena Carter is your mother!” I fired back, my voice rising sharply enough to make the heart monitor beside the bed beep with accelerated rhythm. “She raised you, she supported you through college, and the moment a wealthy family offered you social status, you sold her out without a second thought!”

Arthur’s face twisted in desperate rage. He pointed a shaking finger at my chest. “You think you’re so untouchable, don't you? With your fancy DOJ title and your federal badges! But you’re just a cold, bitter careerist who couldn't keep a man if her life depended on it! You’ve ruined our family!”

Before I could answer, the door pushed open again.

Marcus Thorne stood in the doorway, flanked by two armed federal marshals. He held a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents.

“Mr. Arthur Carter?” Marcus asked smoothly.

Arthur turned, blinking in sudden terror. “Who are you?”

“Marcus Thorne, Special Counsel’s Office,” Marcus replied, stepping into the room and extending the papers toward Arthur’s chest. “You are hereby served with a federal subpoena to appear before a grand jury tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Furthermore, based on intercepted financial records obtained from your corporate accounts this morning, you are also being charged as a co-conspirator in the fraudulent diversion of family trust assets belonging to Helena Carter.”

Arthur stared at the papers as if they were venomous snakes. He didn't take them. They fluttered from Marcus’s hand, landing softly on the hospital floor beside Arthur’s shoes.

“No...” Arthur whispered, backing away toward the door. “No, this isn't happening...”

“It’s happening, Arthur,” I said quietly, watching him retreat. “And the trial is going to be televised.”
