Chapter 7 - The Interrogation of Brooke Vance

By 2:00 PM, Brooke Vance sat alone in a sterile holding cell at the state police barracks forty miles outside Westbridge.
The designer cashmere blanket was gone. Her hair, previously styled to perfection, hung in limp strands around her face. The tiny adhesive bandage on her cheek looked absurdly small compared to the crushing weight of the federal indictments stacked against her.
The heavy steel door swung open, and I walked in, carrying a single manila folder. I sat down across the metal table from her, resting my hands flat against the cold surface.
Brooke glared at me, her eyes burning with unadulterated venom. 📱
“You think you’re clever, don't you?” Brooke spat, leaning forward until her nose nearly touched mine. “Ruining a family over a little family disagreement! My father is going to tear your career to shreds!”
“Your father’s commercial real estate firm is currently under federal investigation for tax evasion, Brooke,” I replied calmly, my voice dropping into a register that made her flinch. “He has bigger problems than your temper tantrums.”
Brooke’s defiant expression wavered for a fraction of a second. “It was an accident! The old bitch wouldn't stop screaming at me! She insulted my mother, she insulted my wedding, she walked into our house uninvited—”
“She was visiting her son’s home,” I corrected sharply. “And you struck her with a baseball bat with enough force to fracture multiple ribs and shatter her wrist. Then you forced your husband to lie to police, and your uncle fabricated a mental instability report to lock her in a cell.”
“Arthur helped!” Brooke shrieked, instantly throwing her husband under the bus with zero hesitation. “It was his idea to blame her mental health! He told me if we didn't convince the cops she was crazy, my family would cut us off financially! He’s just as guilty as I am!”
“I know,” I said softly, opening the folder and sliding a multipage confession form across the table. “That’s why he’s being indicted right beside you.”
Brooke stared at the document, her lower lip trembling. The illusion of her untouchable social supremacy had completely dissolved, leaving behind a terrified, small-minded woman facing ten to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary for aggravated assault, hate crimes against an elderly citizen, and obstruction of justice.

“If I sign this... if I cooperate against Arthur and my uncle...” Brooke whispered, her voice cracking, “will the judge go easier on me?”
“You can ask the judge yourself,” I said, standing up and smoothing my jacket. “In court. Under oath.”
