Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

My home office was a vault of glass and dark walnut overlooking the valley. I sat behind my desk with four laptop screens open, flanked by my chief corporate attorney, Arthur Vance, and my lead forensic accountant, Sarah Lin.

“We’ve pulled everything, Nicholas,” Sarah said, tapping her keyboard to project a massive financial flow chart onto the central wall screen. “Your mother’s personal accounts, her non-profit foundations, and the Sterlington Family Trust.”

I leaned back in my leather chair, staring at the complex web of red lines connecting Penelope’s offshore holdings to various domestic accounts.

“Show me the anomalies,” I commanded.

Sarah zoomed in on a cluster of recurring monthly transactions totaling over three hundred thousand dollars over the past six months.

“Here,” Sarah pointed. “Payments made from the Sterlington Children’s Foundation—a charity your mother chairs—directly to a private shell company registered in Delaware called Apex Medical Advisory LLC.”

“Who owns Apex?” I asked.

“We cracked the shell three hours ago,” Arthur Vance spoke up, adjusting his glasses. “Apex is owned entirely by Dr. Aris Thorne.”

I recognized that name instantly. Dr. Thorne was a prominent, high-society psychiatrist in Manhattan who frequently appeared on television networks and treated the elite of New England society.

“Why was my mother paying a celebrity psychiatrist three hundred thousand dollars out of a charity fund?” I demanded.

“Because,” Arthur said, sliding a thick manila folder across my desk, “Dr. Thorne was preparing a formal, eighty-page independent psychiatric evaluation declaring Sophie Sterlington unfit to retain legal custody of Julian Sterlington due to severe, incurable delusional psychosis and dangerous child neglect.”

I opened the folder. Inside were draft copies of medical evaluation forms bearing Sophie’s forged signature, alongside sworn affidavits from Penelope detailing fabricated incidents of Sophie threatening the baby. The final page was an emergency petition for temporary legal guardianship—naming Penelope Sterlington as the sole custodian of my son and the trustee of Julian’s multi-million-dollar trust account.

The document was dated for submission next Monday.

She had planned the whole thing down to the exact day.

If I hadn't installed that camera in the wooden owl when I did, I would have come home next week to find my wife committed to a private psychiatric institution three states away, and my mother holding full legal control over my son and his future inheritance.

“It’s a masterpiece of criminal conspiracy, Nicholas,” Arthur said grimly. “She was using charitable funds to bribe a licensed physician to forge medical records, while simultaneously poisoning the victim to match the symptoms described in those forged records.”

I closed the folder with a soft, final thud.

“Is it enough for a federal indictment?” I asked.

“It’s enough to put your mother and Dr. Thorne in federal prison for fifteen years on charges of healthcare fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, and aggravated child endangerment,” Arthur confirmed. “That’s not even counting the state criminal charges for domestic poisoning and assault.”

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass window. In the distance, the sun was beginning to set over the estate, casting long, bloody shadows across the pine forest.

“She wants to play with power,” I said, standing up from my chair. “Let’s show her what real power looks like. Arthur, issue a formal freeze on every bank account linked to the Sterlington Family Trust. Cut off her credit cards, her legal retainers, and her access to the family estate in Boston.”

“And Dr. Thorne?” Sarah asked.

“Contact the Medical Board and the FBI’s financial crimes division,” I replied, my eyes fixed on the horizon. “I want Thorne arrested in his office before the market closes tomorrow. But as for my mother... don't serve the arrest warrant yet.”

Arthur looked surprised. “Why not, Nicholas? We have her pinned.”

“Because,” I said, a cold smile touching my lips, “my mother is hosting her annual Sterlington Foundation Victory Gala at the Grand Regency Hotel tomorrow night. She thinks she can hide behind her high-society friends. I want her to have her audience.”
