Chapter 8 - The Gala of Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Regency Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, silk gowns, and tuxedos. Over four hundred of New England’s most powerful figures—senators, hedge fund managers, socialites, and media executives—were gathered for the 30th Annual Sterlington Foundation Gala.

At the head table, under a massive banner displaying the foundation’s crest, sat Penelope Sterlington.

She looked radiant in an emerald silk dress, diamond necklace gleaming against her throat, holding a glass of vintage champagne. She was holding court with a group of wealthy donors, playing the role of the brave, grieving mother to perfection.

“It’s just devastating,” Penelope sighed dramatically, dabbing her eye with a lace handkerchief as two prominent society wives leaned in. “Nicholas is so blinded by affection that he can’t see how sick the poor girl is. I’m doing everything in my power to protect little Julian, but it’s tearing my heart out...”

“You are so courageous, Penelope,” one of the women gushed. “Taking on such a burden for the sake of your family!”

At the side of the ballroom stage, the grand double doors swung open.

The chatter in the room didn't stop immediately, but a ripple of quiet surprise began to spread from the back tables toward the front.

I walked into the ballroom wearing a tailored black tuxedo.

And beside me, holding my arm with absolute grace and poise, was Sophie.

She looked magnificent. She wore an icy silver backless gown that showcased her posture, her hair swept up into an elegant chignon, her skin glowing under the chandelier lights. There was no trace of the pale, broken woman who had been cowering in the nursery twenty-four hours earlier. Her head was held high, her eyes sharp and clear as she scanned the room.

Penelope’s champagne glass froze halfway to her lips. Her eyes bulged as she saw us walking calmly down the central carpet toward the stage.

Murmurs erupted across the ballroom.

- “Is that Nicholas Sterlington?” - “Look at his wife... she looks incredible!” - “I thought the news said she was admitted to a psychiatric facility yesterday?”

Penelope scrambled to her feet, her face dropping its tragic facade, replaced by a flash of pure panic. She whispered frantically to her personal security guard standing near the stage.

The guard stepped forward to block our path. “Mr. Sterlington, Mrs. Sterlington... your mother requested a private perimeter—”

Marcus, who was walking three paces behind us in a sleek suit, stepped up, placed his palm flat against the guard’s chest, and gently but firmly pushed him out of the way like a wooden post.

We reached the foot of the stage just as the master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the announcer stammered, looking nervously between me and Penelope. “Please welcome the chair of the Sterlington Foundation, Mrs. Penelope Sterlington, for her opening remarks...”

Penelope tried to recover. She straightened her spine, plastered a plastic smile on her face, and walked toward the podium, gripping the edges of the wooden stand so hard her knuckles turned white.

“Thank you, everyone,” Penelope said into the microphone, her voice trembling slightly before she forced it steady. “Tonight is about hope... about protecting our community’s most vulnerable children—”

“Speaking of protecting children,” I said, my voice projecting clearly through the lapel microphone I had clipped onto my tuxedo jacket, synced directly into the hotel’s master audio system.

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

Penelope glared at me from the podium, her tone dropping into a desperate whisper over the speakers. “Nicholas, sit down this instant. You are making a scene.”

May you like

“I’m not making a scene, Mother,” I said, holding up a small black remote control. “I’m delivering the keynote presentation.”

I clicked the button.
