Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Dynasty

Behind Penelope, the massive thirty-foot projection screen—intended to display the foundation’s charitable work—went dark for two seconds.

Then, a high-definition video feed illuminated the screen.

The four hundred guests in the ballroom gasped simultaneously.

The video showed the glass house nursery. The timestamp in the corner read: YESTERDAY - 02:14 AM.

On the massive screen, Penelope Sterlington stormed into the room, her face contorted in vicious rage. The crystal-clear audio echoed through every speaker in the ballroom:

“You’re a parasite, Sophie! You live in my son’s home, wear jewelry he paid for, and still complain about being tired?”

The high-society crowd shrank back in absolute horror.

Penelope turned around on stage, looking at her own face magnified thirty feet high, screaming at a terrified young mother holding a crying baby.

“Turn it off!” Penelope shrieked at the sound booth. “Turn it off right now! That’s a fake! It’s an AI generation! Turn it off!”

The audio engineer in the booth, who had been handed a federal subpoena and five thousand dollars by my legal team twenty minutes earlier, didn't move a finger.

The video continued.

The ballroom watched in stunned, suffocating silence as Penelope grabbed Sophie by the hair, violently twisting her head back while Julian screamed. They heard Penelope boast about her fake medical reports. They saw her pull out the unlabeled bottle of sedatives and laugh directly into the camera.

Socialites lowered their champagne glasses in utter disgust. Media executives pulled out their smartphones, recording the projection screen. Board members of the Sterlington Foundation stared at Penelope as if she were a toxic alien species.

Penelope backed away from the podium, her breath coming in ragged, panting gasps. “It’s a lie... he’s trying to frame me... I love my family! I did it for the family!”

Sophie took one step forward, looking up at Penelope on the stage. Her voice was calm, clear, and carried across the quiet room without needing a microphone.

“You didn't do it for the family, Penelope,” Sophie said. “You did it because you’re a coward who couldn't control us anymore.”

Before Penelope could respond, the heavy grand doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open.

Six uniformed officers from the Massachusetts State Police, accompanied by three special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, marched down the central aisle.

Lead Agent Miller walked directly onto the stage, pulling a heavy brass badge from his belt while an officer pulled Penelope’s arms behind her back.

“Penelope Sterlington,” Agent Miller announced into the podium microphone, his voice echoing across the ballroom. “You are under arrest for federal healthcare fraud, corporate embezzlement, domestic assault, and intent to administer a controlled substance to a minor.”

The silver handcuffs clicked loudly around Penelope’s manicured wrists.

The diamond necklace around her neck caught the light one last time as the officers turned her around to walk her down the stage steps.

Her emerald dress was rumpled. Her hair had pulled loose from its perfect spray. She looked at the crowd of her peers—the people whose opinions she had valued more than human life—and saw only disgust, horror, and cold rejection staring back at her.

As she passed me and Sophie, Penelope stopped, her eyes wide with frantic, terrified desperation.

“Nicholas... please,” she whimpered, her voice entirely stripped of its authority. “I’m your mother... you can’t let them do this to me...”

I looked at her without a single trace of anger, pity, or regret left in my soul.

“My mother,” I said softly, “would never hurt my wife or my child. You are just a stranger who stayed in my house too long.”

The officers guided her out of the ballroom, her designer heels dragging awkwardly against the carpet as the press cameras flashed relentlessly in her face.
