Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Syndicate

Two days later.
While Cora rested peacefully under twenty-four-hour security, I spent my afternoon in the executive office suite of Saint Jude Memorial—which had been completely cleared of Marcus’s personal belongings, replaced by my sleek, minimalist decor.
Sitting across from my massive walnut desk were two high-ranking officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation: Special Agent Vance and Special Agent Torres.
"Mrs. Vance," Agent Torres said, setting a heavy black tablet on my desk. "The evidence your team provided us from Dr. Kent’s private server didn't just expose domestic abuse and surgical malpractice. It uncovered an entire illicit medical syndicate operating across three states."
I raised an eyebrow, adjusting my reading glasses. "Explain."
"Marcus Kent wasn't working alone," Agent Torres revealed, leaning forward. "He was the ringleader of a network involving four other high-ranking hospital administrators in Denver, Dallas, and Salt Lake City. They were altering organ donor waiting lists, prioritizing wealthy international buyers for illegal transplants, and laundering the proceeds through offshore pharmaceutical shell companies."
"Organ trafficking?" I asked, my voice dropping into a cold, disgusted whisper.
"Precisely," Agent Vance nodded. "Marcus used his position as Chief of Surgery to falsify cause-of-death reports for organ donors. He made tens of millions of dollars off this operation over the last six years. He was using the money to finance his acquisition of Saint Jude’s shares."
I leaned back in my leather chair, resting my chin on my hands.
Marcus wasn't just a brutal abuser in his home; he was a cold-blooded monster who viewed human lives as mere commodities to be bought, sold, and destroyed.
"Where are the other administrators?" I asked flatly.
"Warrants were executed two hours ago in Dallas and Salt Lake City," Agent Torres replied with a sharp smile. "All four individuals are currently in federal custody. The entire syndicate has been completely neutralized. And it’s all thanks to you, Mrs. Vance."
"It was my duty as Chairwoman," I replied smoothly, standing up to shake their hands. "Ensure Marcus Kent receives no bail."
"With federal organ trafficking and money laundering charges added to his docket, Mrs. Vance," Agent Vance assured me, "Marcus Kent will never see the outside of a federal penitentiary again. He’s looking at three life sentences without the possibility of parole."
After the agents left, I walked over to the massive floor-to-ceiling window of my office, looking down at the bustling city streets below.
The sun was shining brightly, illuminating the grand hospital plaza where patients and nurses walked peacefully. The dark shadow that had loomed over this institution—and over my daughter’s life—was finally lifting.
My phone rang again. It was the private security desk at the hospital main entrance.
"Mrs. Vance," the guard reported. "Marcus Kent’s mother, Eleanor Kent, is downstairs in the lobby. She is causing a scene, screaming that she demands to see you and Cora immediately."

I looked down at my golden watch. 1:15 PM.
"Send her up," I said softly. "It’s time to close the book on the Kent family once and for all."
