Chapter 10 - The Empire Reborn

One year later. Summer in Asheville, North Carolina.
The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the vast green lawns of the Vance Private Estate. The air smelled of sweet jasmine, mountain pines, and blooming summer roses.
Laughter echoed across the wide stone patio.
A grand celebration was in full swing. Dozens of close friends, trusted doctors from Saint Jude’s, and loyal staff members were gathered around long tables decorated with white tablecloths and fresh flowers, celebrating Leo’s first birthday.
In the center of the lawn, a giant wooden playground stood near the garden.
One-year-old Leo, now walking on sturdy, chubby legs, was chasing a colorful beach ball across the grass, squealing with absolute delight. Cora ran right behind him, her laughter ringing bright and pure through the warm afternoon air.
Cora had fully recovered. She was vibrant, radiant, and strong. She had taken over as the Executive Director of the newly established Vance Foundation for Women and Children, utilizing her family’s immense fortune to build shelters, provide free legal defense, and offer medical care to survivors of domestic violence across the country.
I stood on the wide stone terrace, holding a glass of fresh lemonade, watching my family thrive under the warm sun.
Arthur Pendelton walked up beside me, handing me a leather portfolio. "The annual report for Saint Jude Health System, Mrs. Vance. Under your leadership, patient satisfaction is up ninety percent, and our new pediatric trauma center has saved over four hundred children this year alone."
"Thank you, Arthur," I smiled warmly, setting the portfolio on the patio table. "You've done an extraordinary job."
"We built something truly remarkable out of the ashes, Mrs. Vance," Arthur noted gently, looking out at Cora and Leo playing on the lawn.
"We didn't build a business, Arthur," I corrected softly, watching my grandson run up the terrace steps with a wide, open-mouthed grin. "We built a sanctuary."
Leo ran right up to me, his tiny hands reaching for my skirt. "Grandma! Grandma! Look!" he babbled happily, holding up a small yellow wildflower he had picked from the grass.
I dropped to one knee on the warm stone patio, scooping my grandson up into my arms, pressing a warm kiss against his chubby, rose-scented cheek.
"It’s beautiful, my sweet boy," I whispered, holding him tight against my chest, feeling his steady, strong, perfect little heart beating against mine.

Cora walked up the steps, leaning against my shoulder, her arm wrapped around my waist as we looked out over our breathtaking, peaceful home together.
The empire Marcus had tried to steal was gone. The pain he had inflicted had been healed. And in its place stood an unbreakable legacy of love, strength, and ultimate protection—a legacy that would guard my family for generations to come.
