Chapter 7 - The Mother's Demise

Five minutes later, the heavy mahogany doors of my office slammed open.
Eleanor Kent swept into the room like a manic whirlwind. She was a woman in her late fifties, drenched in head-to-toe designer clothing, wearing massive diamond earrings and a platinum mink coat despite the mild weather. Her face was flushed dark red with unbridled fury, her expensive makeup smeared with rage.
"You vile, malicious old bitch!" Eleanor shrieked, marching across the plush Persian rug toward my desk, pointing a diamond-encrusted fingernail at my face. "What have you done to my son?! What have you done to Marcus?!"
I remained seated, comfortably resting my hands on my desk, looking at her with total, unbothered calm.
"Good afternoon, Eleanor," I said smoothly. "Please, take a seat."
"Don't you dare talk to me like that!" Eleanor screamed, slamming her heavy crocodile-skin handbag onto my desk, making my teacup rattle. "Marcus is a brilliant surgeon! He is a respected leader! And you... you used your dirty, hidden money to frame him! You dragged his name through the mud! You had him arrested like a common criminal!"
"Your son is a common criminal, Eleanor," I corrected softly, my voice dripping with cold, absolute truth. "In fact, he is far worse. He is a coward who used heavy work boots to break my nine-month-pregnant daughter's ribs."
Eleanor flinched for a fraction of a second, a flicker of panic passing across her eyes, but she quickly hardened her face into a sneer of utter contempt.
"Cora is a weak, useless girl!" Eleanor spat venomously. "She couldn't even keep Marcus happy! A real woman knows how to obey her husband! Marcus was just disciplining her! She probably deserved every bit of it for disobeying him!"
The air in the room instantly plummeted below freezing.
I slowly stood up from my chair. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't shout. But the sheer weight of the aura surrounding me made Eleanor subconsciously take a step backward.
"Disciplining her?" I whispered, stepping around my desk, coming to a stop directly in front of her.
"She was carrying my grandchild, Eleanor," I continued, my dark eyes boring straight into her soul. "Your son threatened to murder her on an operating table during a C-section. And you sit here and tell me she deserved it?"
"Marcus is a Kent!" Eleanor declared arrogantly, trying to hold her chin high. "We built this city’s medical elite! You can't destroy us! My husband’s lawyers will have Marcus out on bail by tomorrow morning, and we will sue you for every penny you possess!"
I let out a short, quiet, melodic laugh that sent a visible shiver down Eleanor’s spine.
"Your husband’s lawyers?" I asked softly, pulling a thick document from my desk drawer and tossing it onto the glass table. "You mean the lawyers who abandoned your husband two hours ago when Vanguard Capital foreclosed on his Aspen clinic?"
Eleanor blinked, her face suddenly going pale. "What... what are you talking about?"
"Your family estate in Greenwich... repossessed," I listed smoothly, stepping closer to her. "Your husband’s offshore accounts in the Caymans... frozen by the IRS. Your private jet... seized by federal marshals twenty minutes ago."
Eleanor’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes darted frantically to the document on the table. "No... no, that's impossible..."
"You see, Eleanor," I whispered, leaning in so close she could smell the faint lavender perfume on my collar. "Your family's elite status was built entirely on loans provided by my late husband’s holding firm. You lived in a house built of my family’s paper. And I have just burned that house to the ground."
Eleanor backed away, her hands trembling violently, her arrogant composure completely shattering into pathetic panic. "You... you ruined us..."
"No, Eleanor," I corrected gently, pointing toward the open office door where two armed security guards were waiting. "Your son ruined you. You raised a monster, and now you will live in the poverty and disgrace you deserve. Security... escort Mrs. Kent off my property. If she ever steps foot on hospital grounds again, have her arrested for trespassing."
"You monster! You evil, bloodless monster!" Eleanor screamed as the security guards grabbed her platinum mink coat, dragging her backward out of the executive suite. Her frantic shrieks echoed down the long corridor until the heavy steel doors clicked shut.

I walked back to my desk, picked up my porcelain teacup, and took a slow, satisfying sip.
The trash had finally been swept away.
