Chapter 7 - Claire’s Fatal Miscalculation

At 2:00 a.m., the heavy oak door of the east wing guest suite finally clicked open.

Claire scrambled backward from the door, looking up with wild, desperate eyes as Dominic stepped into the room. He wore a crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking every bit the apex predator of the New York underworld.

In his hand, he held a single manila folder and a silver fountain pen.

“Did you come to kill me?” Claire spat, scrambling to her feet, her voice trembling with a mix of fury and terror. “Go ahead! My father’s legal team already has a deadman’s switch file containing every single illegal transaction, bank routing number, and wire transfer you’ve executed over the past decade. If I don't check in with them by noon tomorrow, the FBI gets the whole package.”

Dominic stopped three feet away from her. He didn't blink. He didn't raise his voice.

“Claire,” he said calmly. “Do you know why Nathan killed himself?”

She swallowed hard, her chest heaving. “Because... because he was a coward.”

“No,” Dominic replied smoothly. “Nathan killed himself because he knew me better than you do. He knew that when I dismantled an enemy, I didn't just destroy their bank accounts. I destroyed their lineage.”

Claire sneered, trying to mask her panic. “You’re bluffing. You wouldn't dare touch my family. My father is on the federal banking commission!”

Dominic tossed the manila folder onto the edge of the bed.

“Open it,” he commanded.

With shaking hands, Claire untied the string and pulled out a stack of glossy photographs and printed financial audit summaries.

The first photo showed her father, Senator Thomas Bennett, stepping out of a private offshore banking office in Zurich—an office funded entirely by laundered mob money. The second photo showed her brother receiving a cash payout from one of Nathan’s dummy corporations.

“Your father’s entire political campaign for the US Senate was funded by the very syndicate you claim to despise,” Dominic said softly. “Every luxury car, every penthouse, every trust fund your family enjoys was built on blood money, Claire. And the deadman’s switch you mentioned? Nathan didn't set it up for you. He set it up for me. He intended to use it to blackmail your family once he took over my throne.”

Claire stared at the documents, her legs buckling beneath her. She dropped to her knees on the Persian rug, the papers scattering around her.

“No... no, that’s not true...” she whispered, her voice breaking into hysterical sobs.

Dominic stepped closer, crouching down until he was eye-level with her. He pulled the silver fountain pen from his pocket and pressed it firmly into her trembling, pale hand.

“You have two choices, Claire,” Dominic whispered in her ear, his voice like grinding ice. “You sign the asset restitution forms, transferring every single stolen dollar back to the syndicate accounts, and you board a private cargo flight to a non-extradition country before sunrise. Or... you refuse to sign, and I hand these photographs directly to the federal grand jury tomorrow morning, ensuring your entire family spends the next thirty years in a federal penitentiary.”

Claire looked up into his dark, unblinking eyes. She saw no mercy there. No hesitation. Only absolute, cold-blooded survival.

With a shaking hand, she uncapped the pen, pulled the document toward her on the floor, and began to sign her name.
