Chapter 9 - The Fall of the False Brother

Three days later, the rain returned, drumming a steady, melancholic rhythm against the reinforced glass windows of the estate.
Inside the medical wing, Mia Carter was finally strong enough to sit up in an armchair. The bruises along her arms were fading from dark purple to a pale yellow-green, and the color had returned to her cheeks.
Dominic knocked softly on the open door before stepping into the room. In his hands, he carried a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
Mia looked up, her expression turning immediately respectful. She tried to stand, but Dominic waved a hand, motioning for her to stay seated.
“How are you feeling, Mia?” Dominic asked, taking a seat opposite her.
“Much better, Mr. Vale,” Mia said softly, her hands resting nervously in her lap. “Dr. Vance said I can leave the medical wing by tomorrow. Though... I understand if you need to let me go. After everything that happened... my presence here might bring up complications.”
Dominic frowned slightly.
“Complications?”
“Well... the staff is talking. And with Miss Claire gone... people will wonder.”
“Claire is never coming back,” Dominic said flatly. “And neither is Nathan. As for the staff, they answer to you now.”
Mia blinked, staring at him in disbelief. “To me?”
Dominic slid the mahogany box across the small coffee table and popped the brass latch. Inside rested a heavy, intricately engraved silver master key ring—the keys to every sector, safe, and vault in the main estate, alongside a formal corporate deed.
“For three years, you ran this household with absolute precision, and you protected my home better than my own security detail,” Dominic said quietly. “You didn't ask to be dragged into this war. But when you discovered the betrayal, you risked your life to protect what was mine.”
Mia looked down at the keys, tears shimmering in her eyes. She didn't touch them immediately.
“Mr. Vale... I’m just a housekeeper.”
“You’re the head of household operations for the Vale estate,” Dominic corrected gently. “With a tripled salary, full medical coverage for you and Harper, and a permanent equity trust set up in Harper’s name for her university education.”
Mia covered her mouth with her trembling hand, a sob catching in her throat. For years, she had worked in the shadows of a brutal criminal empire, treated as invisible by the very men who ruled the streets.
“Thank you, Mr. Vale,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “I... I don’t know what to say.”
May you like
“You don’t have to say anything,” Dominic stood up, adjusting his cuffs. “Just keep making that coffee the way you do. It’s the only thing in this house worth waking up for.”
As Dominic turned and walked out of the room, leaving Mia staring at the keys that symbolized a brand-new beginning, the shadows of the past finally lifted completely from the halls of the Hudson Valley estate.
