Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The following evening, a glittering charity gala was being held at the Newport Yacht Club. The city’s elite had gathered in force, sipping cocktails and discussing philanthropy while secretly plotting real estate acquisitions.
Julian Vance stood near the bar, swirling his scotch, wearing the smug grin of a man who believed his trap was about to spring. He had ensured copies of the fabricated dossier were quietly leaked to several gossip columnists and board members, expecting Pedro Jacobs to arrive alone, humiliated and furious.
The heavy glass doors of the yacht club swung open.
All conversations abruptly ceased.
Pedro Jacobs walked in—not alone, and not defeated.
He wore a bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his posture radiating absolute, unassailable power. And walking right beside him, with her hand resting lightly on his arm in an undeniable display of partnership, was Abigail Hill, stunning in a floor-length emerald silk gown that commanded every eye in the room.
Julian Vance’s jaw dropped. He choked on his scotch, coughing violently as he stared at them in utter disbelief.
Pedro led Abigail directly toward the bar where Julian stood.
“Vance,” Pedro greeted smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent hall.
“Jacobs... I—I see you brought your... guest,” Julian stammered, frantically trying to regain his composure. He glanced around, waiting for the scandal to drop. “Did you happen to check the mail today? I thought you might be interested in some... reading material regarding Miss Hill’s background.”
Pedro stopped. He tilted his head, his gray eyes narrowing into two dangerous slits.
“You mean the forged dossier your fixer fabricated in Boston for forty thousand dollars?” Pedro asked mildly, pulling a pristine manila folder from his jacket pocket and tossing it carelessly onto the bar counter right in front of Julian’s drink.
Julian’s face turned the color of spoiled milk.
“I—I don't know what you’re talking about,” Julian whispered, stepping back.
“You should,” Pedro stepped forward, towering over his rival so menacingly that Julian practically melted into the wood paneling. “Because as of twenty minutes ago, federal marshals executed a search warrant on your offices for wire fraud, corporate espionage, and malicious defamation. Your primary bank accounts have been frozen, and your municipal bids have been permanently revoked.”
“You can’t do that!” Julian hissed in panic. “That’s an abuse of power!”
“It’s not an abuse of power, Julian,” Pedro said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “It’s a hostile takeover of your entire career. And the best part? I didn't even have to break a sweat.”
Before Julian could utter another word, two federal agents in dark suits stepped out from the crowd, placed handcuffs on Julian Vance’s wrists, and escorted him out of the yacht club in front of Newport’s most prominent socialites.
The silence in the room was deafening.
Pedro didn't care about the whispers. He turned to Abigail, offering a genuine, breathtaking smile that softened the hard lines of his face.

“Shall we dance?” Pedro asked softly, extending his hand.
Abigail placed her hand in his, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face. “Only if you promise not to step on my toes, Mr. Jacobs.”
