Chapter 10 - A New Dawn at Breakers Mansion

An hour later, the master suite of Breakers Mansion was warm, smelling of eucalyptus and hot chocolate.

Ben and Jerry were tucked safely into their beds, exhausted, wrapped in heated blankets, and sound asleep after a thorough medical checkup from the family doctor who confirmed they were bruised and cold, but entirely unharmed.

Down in the study, a roaring fire crackled in the hearth.

Abigail sat on the leather sofa, tending to a deep, jagged cut along Pedro’s forearm with a sterile gauze pad and antiseptic. She moved with tender, focused efficiency, her fingers gently brushing against his skin.

Pedro sat quietly, watching her face in the flickering firelight. He didn't flinch from the sting of the antiseptic. His eyes tracked every movement of her hands, every curve of her lips.

“You could have died out there,” Abigail whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she secured the bandage. “You jumped into freezing surf without a second thought.”

“So did you,” Pedro replied softly, catching her hand before she could pull away.

Abigail looked up. Their eyes locked, the air between them thick with unspoken years of grief, walls, and defenses finally melting away into nothingness.

“Ten nannies in one month,” Pedro murmured, his thumb gently tracing the back of her hand. “I fired ten women because I was looking for someone who could fix my sons. But I realize now... I wasn't just looking for a caregiver.”

Abigail’s breath hitched. “What were you looking for, Pedro?”

“I was looking for you,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register of absolute truth. “You didn't just save my boys, Abigail. You saved me. You brought life back into this mausoleum. You taught me how to feel again.”

Abigail’s dark eyes filled with unshed tears, her iron armor completely gone, replaced by a radiant, vulnerable warmth.

“I’m not going anywhere, Pedro,” she whispered. “Not ever.”

Pedro leaned in slowly, closing the microscopic distance between them, and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, tender kiss that sealed not just a contract, but a family.

Outside, the storm over Newport Harbor finally broke, parting the heavy clouds to reveal a brilliant tapestry of stars stretching out endlessly across the Atlantic—shining down upon Breakers Mansion, a home that was finally, truly alive.
