Chapter 9 - The Crisis at Sea

Two weeks after Julian Vance’s public downfall, life at Breakers Mansion had transformed entirely. The echoing stillness of the halls had been replaced by the warm, chaotic sounds of a real home. Ben and Jerry’s laughter echoed up the stairwells; meals were eaten together around the kitchen island; and Pedro found himself rushing home from his office early every single evening.

Yet, as autumn gave way to the biting chill of early winter, the Atlantic decided to test them one final time.

It started on a Saturday afternoon. The twins, full of energy, had snuck out through the garden gate toward the private rocky cove at the edge of the estate to retrieve a remote-controlled boat that had drifted too close to the churning tide.

Abigail, checking their rooms, noticed they were missing. Looking out the study window, she spotted two small figures scrambling down the slippery, algae-covered rocks near the crashing surf as a sudden, ferocious squall blew in off the ocean.

“Pedro!” Abigail screamed, bursting into his study. “The boys are down at the cove!”

Without a second thought, Pedro bolted out of the house, sprinting across the lawn with Abigail right behind him.

By the time they reached the rocky shore, freezing spray was blasting against the cliffs. Jerry had slipped on a slick rock, sliding halfway down into a narrow, surging crevice where the freezing ocean water was rapidly rising. Ben was screaming hysterically, trying to pull his brother out, but the current was too strong.

“Ben! Stay back!” Pedro roared over the wind.

Without hesitating, Pedro plunged down the treacherous rocks, sliding and scraping his hands against the jagged stone. He hit the freezing water without a second thought, wading chest-deep into the violent surf to grab Jerry just as a massive wave threatened to sweep the boy out to sea.

Abigail scrambled down right behind him, grabbing Ben and pulling him safely up onto the higher ledge, wrapping her own coat around his shivering frame.

Pedro heaved Jerry up into Abigail’s waiting arms. “Take him! Get him up to the house!”

“I’m not leaving you!” Abigail shouted back over the roar of the waves, her eyes locked on Pedro with fierce, terrifying loyalty.

“I have him!” Pedro yelled, his voice cracking with adrenaline as he dragged himself out of the churning water, clutching Jerry tightly against his chest.
