Chapter 5 - The Parents' Demands

By Friday morning, my family’s united front had completely shattered into desperate, warring factions.
Vanessa was facing total financial ruin. With Mark suspended from his firm without pay and his corporate credit cards canceled, their extravagant lifestyle had come to an abrupt halt. Their country club membership was frozen, their eldest son's private school tuition payment bounced, and Mark was threatening to file for divorce if Vanessa didn't fix the mess she had created.
At 10:00 a.m., an unexpected knock came at the door of my private residential suite.
I looked through the peephole. Standing in the hallway were my mother and Vanessa.
Vanessa looked terrible. The pristine, immaculate hair and high-end makeup she usually wore were gone. Her eyes were swollen, her clothes were wrinkled, and her hands were trembling. My mother looked ten years older, clutching her handbag as if it were a life raft.
I opened the door six inches, keeping the safety latch engaged.
"Claire," my mother begged, her voice high and strained. "Please. Open the door. We need to talk to you."
"Lily is sleeping inside," I said calmly through the crack. "Say whatever you came to say right here."
Vanessa pushed past my mother, grabbing the edge of the door. "Claire, please! Mark is going to leave me! The police called my house this morning asking for a formal interview regarding child endangerment! They’re talking about filing criminal charges!"
"Actions have consequences, Vanessa," I said.
"It was a joke!" Vanessa cried out, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "I didn't mean to leave her out there that long! I forgot she was out there! I was distracted by the kids!"
"You didn't forget," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register. "The hotel surveillance footage recorded full audio, Vanessa. The housekeeper asked you twice if you wanted to let the little girl inside. Do you remember what you told her?"
Vanessa froze. Her mouth parted in shock.
"The audio picked it up clearly," I said. "You told the housekeeper, 'Leave her there. She needs to learn that she doesn't belong with us.'"
My mother turned slowly toward Vanessa, her eyes wide with horror. "Vanessa... you said that?"
"She’s making it up!" Vanessa screamed defensively. "She’s manipulating the tape!"
"The tape is currently in the hands of the Charleston County District Attorney," I replied calmly. "And my legal team has filed a civil suit against you personally for Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress on a Minor, seeking damages that will ensure you never touch a dime of family assets again."
"Claire!" my mother wailed, falling to her knees in the carpeted hallway. "She’s your sister! How can you be so heartless?! If Mark leaves her and she goes to jail, her boys won't have a mother!"
I looked down at my mother kneeling on the floor—the same woman who had sat comfortably in a luxury hotel room while my daughter cried for three hours.
"Where was your heart when my daughter was sitting on a cold floor by an ice machine, Mom?" I asked quietly. "Where was your compassion when she was screaming for her mother?"
My mother swallowed hard, unable to meet my eyes.

"You spent your whole life protecting Vanessa from the consequences of her cruelty," I said softly. "Now, you can spend the rest of your life comforting her while she pays for it. Do not come back here again."
I closed the door firmly, engaged the deadbolt, and walked away from the sound of their weeping echoing through the hallway.
