Chapter 6 - A House Divided

The fallout between Mark and Vanessa reached its explosive climax on Saturday night.
Driven mad by the impending loss of his career and social status, Mark went through Vanessa’s private financial records while she was out meeting with her criminal defense lawyer. What he discovered pushed him over the edge.
For three years, Vanessa had been taking out personal loans in Mark’s name—totaling over $140,000—to fund her luxury shopping sprees, spa trips, and secret investments, reassuring the bank that her husband’s executive position at Vance & Bennett Engineering guaranteed repayment.
When Vanessa returned to their rental condo at 8:00 p.m., she found Mark sitting at the dining table surrounded by bank statements, loan documents, and a half-empty bottle of bourbon.
"What is all this?" Vanessa asked nervously, hanging her coat in the closet.
Mark didn't look up. "I spoke to David Vance an hour ago."
Vanessa snapped her fingers in annoyance. "Mark, I told you! David is overreacting! Once Claire calms down and drops the lawsuit, David will take you back!"
Mark let out a dark, ragged laugh. He picked up a thick stack of papers and threw them across the table, sending loan notices scattering across the floor.
"Claire isn't dropping the lawsuit, Vanessa," Mark said, his voice flat and dead. "And David isn't taking me back. In fact, the board voted two hours ago to initiate a full forensic audit of my corporate expense account because they suspect you were using company funds for personal expenses."
Vanessa’s face went pale. "They can't prove that..."
"I signed the loan documents, Vanessa!" Mark roared, slamming his fist onto the table so hard the glasses rattled. "You forged my signature on three separate equity lines! You destroyed my career! You alienated the only person in your family who actually held real financial power!"
"I did it for our family!" Vanessa screamed back. "I was trying to keep up our lifestyle! Your salary at that firm wasn't enough!"
"My salary was two hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year!" Mark shouted, standing up, his eyes bloodshot with rage. "It was more than enough until you decided you needed to pretend you were a billionaire! You treated Claire like garbage because you were jealous of her! You were jealous that Daniel left her millions while you were drowning us in debt!"
"Don't you dare talk about Daniel!" Vanessa shrieked.
"Daniel was smart!" Mark yelled. "He saw right through you! That’s why he put everything in a trust that you couldn't touch! And you were so stupid, so unbelievably cruel, that you took out your pathetic jealousy on a six-year-old child!"
Mark pulled a thick envelope from his suit jacket and slapped it onto the table.
"What's that?" Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling.
"Those are divorce papers," Mark said coldly. "And a formal petition for full emergency custody of our sons. My lawyer is filing them at 8:00 a.m. on Monday. I am moving into an apartment downtown tonight."
"Mark, no!" Vanessa wept, lunging forward to grab his arm. "You can't leave me! I have nowhere to go! My parents are getting evicted!"
Mark pulled his arm away with pure disgust, stepping toward the door.

"You should have thought about that before you locked a six-year-old girl out in a hallway, Vanessa," Mark said, his hand on the doorknob. "You built your entire life on cruelty and lies. Enjoy watching it burn."
He slammed the door behind him, leaving Vanessa standing alone in the middle of her scattered debts, listening to the deafening silence of her empty home.
