Chapter 3 - The Financial Audit

By the time Daniel walked through the front door of our house later that evening, holding a takeout bag and expecting me to be waiting with an apology, the illusion of his perfect, controlled life was already beginning to fracture.
According to the security footage from our neighbors and the subsequent police report filed the next morning, Daniel found the kitchen empty. He called out my name, his voice laced with annoyance rather than concern. When no answer came, he walked into the kitchen and found the ring.
He picked up the gold band, scoffed, and then his eyes fell upon the medical report underneath it.
What Daniel didn't know—what he couldn't have known because he never bothered to look past his own reflection—was that the house we lived in, the bank accounts he controlled, and the corporate credit lines he used to fund Megan’s lavish lifestyle were all built on a foundation he didn't own.
Three days later, while Daniel was at his office at Whitmore Consulting, a team of process servers and corporate auditors walked through the glass double doors of his firm, accompanied by two armed county deputies.
They didn't just deliver divorce papers. They delivered an asset-freeze injunction.

Every single corporate account, personal checking account, investment portfolio, and credit card associated with Daniel Whitmore—and his sister Megan—was locked down immediately. The forensic accounting firm I had quietly retained weeks prior had traced over two hundred thousand dollars of embezzled corporate funds and diverted marital assets that Daniel had systematically funneled into hidden accounts to support his family while starving my own salary.
When Daniel tried to use his company card to buy lunch that afternoon, it was declined. When he called his bank, screaming at the representative about a mistake, he was told that the primary account holder—me—had revoked all secondary authorizations and initiated a full marital asset freeze.
