Chapter 5 - The Legal Tsunami

The divorce proceedings were not a negotiation; they were an execution.

Within two weeks, my legal team presented the family court judge with an airtight dossier: the certified medical reports from Mercy General detailing the second-degree burns, photographic evidence of my injuries, the recorded phone calls of Daniel’s verbal threats, and the complete forensic paper trail of financial fraud.

Megan tried to intervene by filing a harassment claim against me, but her attempt collapsed within five minutes when my lawyer produced text messages where Megan openly mocked me, calling me an "atm with a heartbeat" and bragging about how easily she could manipulate her brother into controlling me.

The judge didn't just grant the divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty and financial malfeasance; he awarded me sole ownership of the Arlington house, full restitution of every dollar embezzled from my personal trust, and an emergency protective order that barred both Daniel and Megan from coming within five hundred yards of me or my workplace.

On the day of the final settlement hearing, Daniel looked like a ghost.

His firm had placed him on indefinite administrative leave pending a federal investigation into corporate fund mismanagement. His luxury truck had been repossessed by the bank because he could no longer make the payments without my income backing his loans. And Megan had already packed her bags and moved out of town, realizing that her golden goose had not only stopped laying golden eggs, but had crashed directly into bankruptcy.

As Daniel walked past me in the courthouse hallway, his shoulders slumped, his eyes hollow and defeated, he stopped for a fraction of a second.

"Clara..." he started, his voice cracking. "Can't we... can't we talk about this? We built six years together—"

"You didn't build a marriage, Daniel," I said, looking straight into his eyes without a trace of anger or pity. "You built a trap. And the moment you lit the match, you burned down your own house."
