Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Office

Twenty-four hours after the accounts were frozen, my phone finally rang. It was an unknown number, but I knew the caller ID by heart. I let it ring twice before tapping the screen and putting it on speaker.
"Clara! Have you lost your absolute mind?"
Daniel’s voice was pitched high, trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer, unadulterated panic. He wasn't the calm, commanding man who had stood in our kitchen telling me to obey or leave. The veneer had completely cracked.
"Where are you, Daniel?" I asked, my voice calm, steady, and devoid of the warmth he had taken for granted for six years.
"I’m at my office! The police—well, not police, but some men in suits—just came in here and locked out all our operational accounts! They’re saying the house is frozen, my corporate line is frozen, and my credit cards are blocked! The bank told me you filed an emergency asset injunction! Clara, what is this nonsense? Bring your ass back home right now and fix this before you ruin my career!"
I walked over to the window of the temporary apartment I had rented overlooking the Potomac River, watching the sunlight glinting off the water.
"You told me to obey or leave, Daniel," I reminded him quietly. "I chose to leave. And as for your career—well, it turns out that when you steal from your own wife's personal inheritance to fund your sister's shopping habits, people tend to take notice."
"That money was ours!" he roared, a desk slamming against a wall on his end of the line. "We’re married! What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is—"
"Is mine," I interrupted sharply. "My inheritance from my grandfather was placed into a protected trust before we ever walked down the aisle. A trust that your name was never, ever attached to. But for the last three years, you and your sister have been forging electronic transfer requests using my old laptop credentials to siphon fifty thousand dollars a year into your personal slush fund."
Silence fell over the line. The heavy, suffocating silence of a man who suddenly realized he had stepped off a cliff and was only now looking down.

"How... how do you know about that?" he whispered, his bravado instantly evaporating.
"I’m an independent financial compliance auditor, Daniel," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "Did you honestly think I didn't notice the discrepancies in our joint tax filings? I just wanted to see how far your greed would take you before you finally showed me who you really were. Throwing hot coffee in my face was just the final piece of evidence my attorney needed to prove physical endangerment."
