Chapter 4 - The Truth Behind the Invitation

“Why did you invite me, Marcus?” I asked, stepping closer to him while keeping my children securely behind me. “Tell me the truth. In front of your mother and your remaining guests.”
Marcus swallowed hard. His arrogant posture was entirely broken. He looked like a cornered animal.
“I… I thought…” he stumbled.
“You thought I was broken,” I finished for him. “Your mother ran into my old college friend six months ago in Denver. My friend told her I was raising children in Austin. She didn't mention my company, my success, or my wealth—because I asked my friends to protect my privacy. You and your mother assumed I was a struggling single mother, living on government assistance, bitter and ruined.”
Patricia turned red, lowering her head in shame.
“You wanted me to come here today,” I continued, my voice echoing with righteous power, “so you could show Chloe’s family how far above me you had risen. You wanted to point at the ex-wife who ‘failed at life’ to make yourself look like a triumphant success. You thought you were going to give me a couple hundred dollars as a fake gesture of charity to impress your new in-laws.”
Marcus couldn't deny it. The cruel, calculated truth was written all over his face.
“You haven't changed at all in eight years,” I said quietly. “You are still the same petty, insecure coward who ran away from responsibility because you were terrified of anything that required real sacrifice.”
Sophia pulled on my coat. “Mommy, it smells like mean people in here. Can we go back to the flying helicopter?”
A tiny, triumphant smile touched my lips. “In just a moment, sweetie.”
Marcus suddenly took a step toward the children, his hands reaching out in a pathetic, desperate gesture. “Wait… Kesha, please. They’re eight? All four of them? They’re… they’re my kids. Look at them, they have my eyes! Patricia, look at them! They’re Reynoldses!”
“Don't you dare,” I snapped, my voice turning to liquid ice. “Do not stand there after eight years of absolute abandonment and attempt to claim the treasure I forged in the fire of your absence.”

“I’m their father!” Marcus shouted, his voice cracking with a mix of panic and sudden, sickening greed. “I have rights! You kept them from me!”
“You sent a legal cease-and-desist threatening me with prison if I ever contacted you!” I reminded him, pulling a secondary document from my coat pocket. “And eight years ago, when you didn't respond to the formal paternity summons filed in Travis County, the judge issued a default termination of your parental rights based on abandonment. Legally, Marcus, you are a complete stranger to them.”
