Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

Three weeks after Christmas, the fallout from that fateful afternoon in Boulder continued to ripple through Marcus’s world.

As Liam had warned, Marcus’s life spiraled out of control. When Arthur Sterling pulled his business and informed his network of corporate executives about Marcus’s past, Marcus was promptly terminated from his senior position at the finance firm. His engagement to Chloe was officially canceled, and her family pulled all financial backing from his personal projects.

Desperate and ruined, Marcus tried one last time to fight. He hired a cheap television attorney and filed a sensationalized petition in Travis County Court, demanding a court-ordered paternity test and twenty percent access to my assets under the guise of "belated fatherhood."

The court date arrived on a bright Tuesday morning in downtown Austin.

I sat at the plaintiff’s table beside Liam, wearing a sharp navy suit. I didn’t bring the children to court; they were at their private academy, learning, playing, and living far away from their father's toxic desperation.

Marcus walked into the courtroom looking completely hollowed out. His expensive suit hung loosely on his frame, his hair was messy, and his hands shook as he sat beside his lawyer.

When the judge, a formidable woman named Honorable Judge Evelyn Carter, took the bench, she didn't waste a single second.

“Mr. Reynolds,” Judge Carter said, her eyes cold as she reviewed the thick binder of evidence Liam had submitted. “I have reviewed your petition for paternity rights and asset evaluation. I have also reviewed the certified cease-and-desist letter you served Ms. Vance eight years ago, the default termination decree signed in 2018, and the affidavits from your former fiancée’s family.”

Marcus’s lawyer stood up. “Your Honor, my client was young and misled—”

“Sit down, counsel!” Judge Carter barked, slamming her gavel once.

She turned her sharp gaze onto Marcus. “Mr. Reynolds, you abandoned a pregnant woman with quadruplets. You explicitly threatened her with legal ruin if she ever contacted you. You provided zero financial, emotional, or physical support for eight years. You only showed interest the moment you discovered Ms. Vance was the billionaire founder of Vance Tech.”

Marcus tried to speak, “Your Honor, I just want to know my children—”

“You do not want to know your children, Mr. Reynolds,” Judge Carter interrupted ruthlessly. “You want access to a fortune you did not help build, and a family you tried to destroy. Your petition is dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent restraining order. You are forbidden from coming within one thousand yards of Ms. Vance, her children, her home, or her places of business.”

Judge Carter struck the wooden block. BANG.

“Court is adjourned.”

Marcus sank back into his chair, his eyes fixed on the floor. It was over. Completely, legally, and permanently over.
