Chapter 4 - The Whispers of Treachery

Adrian found Maya sitting on a wooden bench in the small park two blocks away from the Gold Coast tower. It was drizzling, a cold Chicago rain that turned the asphalt glossy black. She was huddled in her thin winter coat, watching Lucy jump in a shallow puddle near the playground.
When Adrian sat down beside her on the bench, she turned in surprise.
He wasn't wearing his hearing aids, but in the quiet of the rain-slicked park, he didn't need them. He looked directly at her face, watching the subtle shifts in her mouth as she spoke.
“You shouldn't be out here without a coat,” she said, her lips moving slowly, clearly, as if she intuitively knew he was reading them.
“I don’t care about the coat,” Adrian said. “I came to apologize for Julian.”
Maya shook her head, a sad smile touching her lips. “He was only saying what everyone else thinks, Adrian. Look at us. You’re a billionaire tech mogul. I’m a woman who cleans houses for twelve dollars an hour after taxes. People like Julian... they live in a world where everything has a price tag. And to him, I look like a scam.”
“Julian doesn't know anything,” Adrian said fiercely. “He’s a man who measures human value in portfolio percentages. I’ve spent ten years surrounded by people like him. Do you know how many of them came to visit me when I had my second ear surgery last year? Zero. Not one.”
He looked over at Lucy, who had found a bright red leaf and was holding it up to the gray sky like a treasure.
“You and Lucy gave me something money couldn't buy,” Adrian continued, his voice softer now. “You gave me a home. For three weeks, I didn't feel like a broken machine in an empty museum. I felt human.”
Maya turned to look at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. For months, she had viewed Adrian Mercer as an intimidating figure of immense power—a ghost who moved through a palace of glass and steel. But looking at him now, wet rain dripping from his dark hair, his eyes filled with a raw, desperate honesty, she saw the seven-year-old boy who had lost his hearing and his mother in the same dark week.
“We like being with you, too, Adrian,” she whispered softly. “Lucy asks about you every morning. She thinks you’re a prince who lives in a cloud castle.”
Adrian smiled—a genuine, unforced smile that lit up his sharp features. “A prince, huh? Well, tell her the prince wants to take her and her mother out for real food. No pink lunchboxes tonight.”
Maya hesitated. “Are you sure? What about your board members? What about the press?”
“Let them talk,” Adrian said, reaching out to take her hand. Her skin was rough and cold, but to him, it was the warmest thing in the world. “Let them all talk.”
However, while Adrian was choosing warmth, Julian Thorne was choosing war.
Later that evening, inside a dimly lit steakhouse in downtown Chicago, Julian sat across from a tall, slicked-back man with a predatory smile. His name was Richard Vance—Maya’s ex-husband.
Julian pushed a thick Manila folder across the table toward Richard. Inside were high-resolution photographs of Maya, Lucy, and Adrian walking together in the park, along with financial records showing Adrian’s massive personal fortune.
“She’s gotten her hooks into him,” Julian said, swirling his glass of bourbon. “Adrian is vulnerable. He’s deaf, he’s isolated, and he’s emotionally unstable. If she convinces him to put her in his will, or worse, marry her, control of Mercer Tech will be compromised.”
Richard flipped through the photographs, his eyes gleaming with dark greed when he saw the pictures of the Gold Coast penthouse.
“Maya always was lucky,” Richard sneered, his fingers tracing the outline of his daughter’s face in the photo. “She left me, took my kid, and now she’s sleeping with a billionaire?”
“She’s not sleeping with him yet,” Julian corrected sharply. “Which gives us an opportunity. You still have joint legal custody claims that were never finalized in court, correct?”
“Yeah,” Richard lied smoothly. “I have rights.”
“Good,” Julian said, leaning in close. “Here’s the plan. You file an emergency petition for full custody of Lucy. You claim Maya is taking the child into the home of an unstable, mentally unfit man. We drag Adrian’s name through the mud in the tabloids. The board will be forced to remove him as CEO due to public scandal. You get a massive out-of-court settlement from Adrian to make the lawsuit go away... and I take control of Mercer Tech.”
May you like
Richard smiled, revealing a row of crooked, yellowing teeth. “I like the way you think, lawyer. When do we start?”
Julian raised his glass. “Tomorrow morning.”
