Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

The storm hit on a Thursday.

Maya was in the middle of preparing dinner in the penthouse kitchen while Lucy sat at the island counter drawing pictures of sea turtles with green crayons. Adrian was in his home office, wearing his hearing aids, listening to a presentation on his computer monitor.

Suddenly, the front doorbell chimed loudly.

Before Maya could walk to the foyer, the heavy double doors were pushed open. Two uniformed Chicago police officers walked in, accompanied by a woman from Child Protective Services and Richard Vance.

Maya dropped the wooden spoon she was holding. It hit the tile floor with a loud clatter.

“Richard?” she breathed, her face draining of all color. “What... what are you doing here?”

“I’m here to save my daughter,” Richard announced loudly, ensuring his voice carried through the spacious apartment. He turned to the CPS worker. “You see this? She brought our four-year-old child to live with a stranger—a man with a history of psychiatric isolation and severe sensory deficits.”

“That’s a lie!” Maya screamed, rushing to stand between Richard and Lucy. Lucy began to cry, terrified by the loud voices and the dark uniforms of the police officers. “You abandoned us two years ago! You haven't paid child support! You don't care about Lucy!”

“I have a court order, Ms. Bennett,” the CPS worker said coldly, holding up a piece of paper. “An emergency injunction has been filed by Mr. Vance. Temporary custody has been awarded to the father pending an investigation into the living conditions and safety of this residence.”

“No! No!” Maya sobbed, grabbing Lucy in her arms. “You can’t take her! Please!”

Adrian walked out of his office, his brow furrowed in confusion and growing anger. He saw the police, the sobbing child, and the triumphant, ugly sneer on Richard Vance’s face.

“What is the meaning of this?” Adrian demanded, stepping between Maya and the officers.

“Mr. Mercer,” one of the officers said neutrally. “Step back. This is a court-ordered child protection matter. Do not interfere, or we will arrest you for obstruction.”

Julian Thorne stepped into the foyer right behind the police, pretending to look shocked and concerned.

“Adrian, please, don't make this worse!” Julian pleaded dramatically, glancing at a reporter from the Chicago Sun-Times who had somehow managed to sneak up the private elevator behind them. “This is what I warned you about! This woman’s messy personal life is spilling into your business. Think of your reputation! Think of the company!”

Adrian looked at Julian, then at the reporter whose camera lens was already flashing, capturing Maya’s tears and Lucy’s screams.

The pieces assembled in Adrian’s mind with terrifying, crystalline clarity. The unannounced visit, the sudden custody filing, the presence of the media—it wasn't a coincidence. It was a orchestrated hit. A trap designed to break Maya, humiliate him, and wrest control of Mercer Tech from his hands.

“You set this up,” Adrian said, turning his gaze onto Julian. His voice was deathly quiet, but filled with a lethal intensity.

“Adrian, you’re confused—” Julian began.

“Get out of my house,” Adrian said, his eyes burning with a rage he hadn't felt in decades.

“Sir,” the police officer warned, grabbing Maya’s arm to separate her from Lucy. “We need the child.”

Lucy’s frantic screams filled the apartment: “Mommy! Mommy! Adrian, help!”

Maya was weeping hysterically, her hands clawing at the officer’s sleeve as Richard grabbed Lucy by the arm and pulled her away. “Please, Richard! Don't do this to her! She doesn't even know you!”

Richard shoved Maya back onto the floor, pulling the crying child toward the door. “She’ll get used to me. Especially with the child support money your billionaire boyfriend is going to pay me to drop this case.”

Adrian lunged forward to hit Richard, but the second police officer restrained him, slamming him back against the wall.

“Don't do it, Mr. Mercer,” the officer growled. “You hit a civilian, you go to jail tonight.”

Adrian could only watch, paralyzed, as Richard carried the screaming, terrified four-year-old out of the penthouse, followed by the CPS worker and Julian Thorne.

The doors slammed shut.

The penthouse went dead silent.

Maya lay crumpled on the marble floor, her body shaking with violent, heart-wrenching sobs. She had lost her daughter. The cruel, ruthless world had crushed her, just as she had always feared it would.

Adrian broke free from the officer’s grip, dropped to his knees beside Maya, and pulled her into his arms. He took out his hearing aids, deliberately drowning out the cruel sound of the wind howling outside the windows.

In the pure, unbroken silence of his world, he rocked her back and forth, making a silent vow.

They thought his silence was a weakness. They thought his deafness made him prey.

They were about to find out how wrong they were.
