Chapter 7 - Sound and Fury

The Cook County Courthouse was packed to capacity. Reporters lined the corridors, cameras flashing as Adrian Mercer walked through the doors, dressed in a flawless charcoal suit, holding Maya’s hand tightly in his own.

Julian Thorne was already inside the courtroom, sitting alongside Richard Vance and his legal team. Julian wore a smug, triumphant smile. He believed he had won. The media pressure was overwhelming, the board was ready to vote Adrian out, and Richard was ready to demand his payoff.

Judge Harrison, a stern woman in her late fifties, pounded her gavel.

“We are here regarding the emergency petition for custody of Lucy Vance,” the judge announced. “Mr. Vance, your council claims the child was in immediate physical and psychological danger while in the care of Ms. Bennett at the residence of Mr. Adrian Mercer.”

“That is correct, Your Honor,” Richard’s lawyer stood up smoothly. “Mr. Mercer is an emotionally unstable man with severe sensory disabilities who has created an unsafe environment for a four-year-old child. Furthermore, Ms. Bennett has neglected her maternal duties—”

“Your Honor,” Evelyn Vance interrupted, standing up gracefully. “Before we address these absurd allegations, I would like to submit Exhibit A into evidence.”

Evelyn walked forward and handed a flash drive to the bailiff, who plugged it into the courtroom monitor.

“This is an audio recording,” Evelyn said, “captured yesterday evening by a private investigator at the O’Hare Motel.”

Julian’s face visibly paled. Richard shifted uncomfortably in his chair.

Evelyn pressed play.

The audio echoed loudly through the courtroom speakers:

“I don't give a damn about the kid, Julian!” Richard’s voice blared clearly through the room. “She won't stop crying for her mother! When do I get the rest of the hundred grand? You promised me fifty down and fifty after the board fires Mercer!”

“Shut up, you idiot!” Julian’s voice replied on the tape. “Just keep the kid hidden until the board meeting at ten. Once Mercer is out, I’ll authorize the final payment from the corporate legal fund. Then you can drop the kid off at a shelter for all I care.”

Gasp of shock rippled through the gallery. The press went into a frenzy, writing furiously on their notebooks.

Judge Harrison’s face turned into thunder. She glared down at Julian and Richard as if they were insects.

“Is this authentic?” Judge Harrison demanded, her voice dripping with rage.

“We have the digital signature and bank transfer logs confirming the paper trail, Your Honor,” Evelyn said, tossing a thick folder onto the defense table. “Julian Thorne bribed Richard Vance to commit fraud, perjury, and conspiracy to commit child endangerment.”

Richard panicked. “He offered me the money! It was his idea!” he screamed, pointing a shaky finger at Julian. “He said the deaf guy was an easy mark!”

“Shut up, you fool!” Julian shouted, slamming his hand on the table.

“Order! Order in this court!” Judge Harrison slammed her gavel repeatedly. “Bailiff, place Mr. Vance and Mr. Thorne under arrest immediately for conspiracy and child endangerment!”

Police officers stepped forward, pulling Julian and Richard from their seats and clicking handcuffs onto their wrists. Julian glared at Adrian, his face twisted in pure hatred as he was dragged away.

“Mr. Mercer,” Julian spat as he passed. “You think you’re whole? You’re just a deaf freak in a empty glass box!”

Adrian stood tall, looking at Julian with absolute calm. He didn't even need to read his lips. The man was nothing now.

Judge Harrison looked down at Maya, her expression softening completely. “Ms. Bennett, the emergency custody order is rescinded immediately. Your daughter is currently in the care of social services in the adjoining room. You may claim her now.”

Maya broke into tears—not tears of sorrow, but tears of pure, overwhelming relief. She turned and threw her arms around Adrian’s neck, weeping against his shoulder.

“Thank you,” she sobbed. “Thank you, Adrian.”

Adrian held her close, pressing his cheek against her soft hair. “I told you,” he whispered. “No one takes our family away.”
