Chapter 6 - A Father's Vow

Mercer’s smile faded for a fraction of a second. “It doesn’t matter. You die here, Caruso.”

Mercer raised the detonator to trigger C4 charges planted along the building’s support pillars.

Before his thumb could press the red button, a high-caliber sniper round shattered the glass skylight above. The bullet tore through Mercer’s wrist, severing his hand clean off. The detonator dropped into the darkness below.

Mercer screamed in agony, clutching his stump as he fell to his knees on the catwalk.

Above the roof, Marco dropped down on a tactical zip-line, firing his sidearm through the high windows, instantly neutralizing the two mercenaries beside Mercer.

Dante sprinted across the frozen floor, catching the falling syringe before it hit the concrete. He drew a heavy hunting knife from his belt, sliced through the heavy ropes binding Rachel’s wrists, and caught her as her weak legs gave out.

“I’ve got you,” Dante whispered, wrapping his heavy wool coat around her shivering body. “You’re safe.”

Rachel clutched Dante’s shirt, tears spilling over her bruised cheeks. “Noah... where is my baby? Is he okay? Did they hurt him?”

“He’s alive. He’s warm, and he’s waiting for you at my home,” Dante said softly, wiping blood from a cut on her forehead with his thumb. “He’s the bravest boy I’ve ever met.”

On the catwalk above, Mercer was crawling toward a fallen hand grenade with his remaining hand, his face contorted in insane rage. “I’ll kill you both!” he screamed.

Dante didn’t even look up. He drew his pistol from his hip and fired three rapid shots through the iron mesh floor of the catwalk.

Mercer collapsed instantly, his body sliding lifelessly against the steel railing before falling forty feet to the concrete floor below, landing with a sickening thud.

Dante picked Rachel up in his arms, holding her tightly against his chest as the sound of police sirens began to echo in the distance.

“Marco,” Dante called out over his shoulder as he carried Rachel toward the exit. “Call the Mayor. Tell him Councilman Sterling has five minutes to resign before I release his offshore banking details to every news station in the state.”

“Understood, boss,” Marco replied, stepping over Mercer’s body. “And Chief Vance?”

“Tell Chief Vance his nephew is currently confessing to kidnapping at the precinct,” Dante said coldly. “If Vance isn’t wearing handcuffs by sunrise, I’ll personally deliver his arrest warrant.”
