Chapter 10 - The Family We Choose

One year later.

The summer evening was warm and clear over the coastal hills of Bellhaven.

At the Caruso estate, the iron gates that had once remained tightly shut against the world were now wide open, surrounded by lush green lawns and blooming white hydrangeas.

On the back patio overlooking the ocean, a large dinner table was set for a celebration. Vincent and Marco were busy grilling steaks on the lawn, arguing good-naturedly about barbecue sauces, while Leo sat at a side table demonstrating a robotic drone toy to eight-year-old Noah, whose laughter echoed across the garden.

Rachel stepped out onto the porch wearing a simple yellow summer dress, carrying a pitcher of fresh lemonade. Her hair was styled softly, her skin radiant with health and peace.

Dante walked up behind her, gently placing a hand on her waist. She leaned back against his chest, placing her hand over his.

Over the past year, the feared mob boss had transformed his business empire, divesting completely from high-risk underworld operations and channeling his immense wealth into legitimate infrastructure, shipping, and community protection. Bellhaven was safer, stronger, and more prosperous than it had ever been in its history.

And at the center of Dante’s world was no longer a cold, empty manor built on grief—but a home filled with music, laughter, and hope.

“What are you thinking about?” Rachel asked softly, turning her head to look up at him.

Dante looked across the lawn at Noah, who was currently chasing Marco in a hilarious attempt to steal a hot dog off a serving tray. He pulled out the silver coin from his pocket—Noah had insisted on lending it back to Dante for good luck on their anniversary—and turned it over in his hand.

“I was thinking about the night he came to my gate,” Dante said, his voice soft and full of emotion. “Everyone told him to wait. The police, the neighbors, the whole world told a seven-year-old boy that his mother was gone and that he couldn't do anything about it.”

Rachel smiled softly, touching Dante’s jawline. “And he didn't listen to a single one of them.”

“Thank God he didn't,” Dante murmured, leaning down to press a soft, tender kiss against her lips.

Noah ran up the porch steps, panting happily, holding two juice boxes in his hands. He looked at Dante and Rachel, a wide, unstoppable grin spreading across his face.

“Hey, Dante! Are we going to look at the stars tonight?” Noah asked eagerly. “The sky is completely clear!”

Dante let go of Rachel’s waist, knelt down, and pulled Noah into a tight, fatherly embrace, ruffling the boy’s dark hair.

“We sure are, Noah,” Dante smiled, looking up at the beautiful family that fate had brought to his gate. “We’ve got all the time in the world.”
