Chapter 7 - The Assault on Pier 17
While Dante’s tactical teams swept the rest of the meatpacking facility, securing three other women who had been held in secondary holding units, Dante carried Rachel straight to his armored vehicle.
Inside the SUV, Leo had already set up a heated blanket and an IV drip administered by Dante’s personal physician, Dr. Chen.
“She has moderate hypothermia and minor concussive symptoms,” Dr. Chen reported after a quick assessment. “But no internal bleeding. She’s going to recover fully.”
Rachel gripped Dante’s hand tightly as the doctor worked, refusing to let go. The strong, terrifying man who ruled Bellhaven’s underworld held her hand with astonishing gentleness, allowing her small, bruised fingers to squeeze his calloused palm.
“How did Noah find you?” Rachel asked, her voice raspy as she took small sips of warm water. “He’s only seven... he doesn’t even know how to ride a subway alone.”
“He walked, Rachel,” Dante said, his expression softening into something deeply human. “He walked across the city, through the rain, with a bleeding knee and one untied shoe. He knocked on my gate and refused to leave until I agreed to help.”
Rachel covered her face with her hands and sobbed uncontrollably—not from fear or pain, but from the overwhelming, magnificent pride of a mother who realized her son had fought heaven and hell to save her.
“I was so scared I’d never see him again,” she wept. “When Evan—when that monster put something in my glass, all I could think about was Noah waiting at home, looking at the door...”
“He never lost faith in you,” Dante told her softly. “When the police told him you had abandoned him, he grabbed the officer’s coat and told him he was wrong. He said you would never leave him.”

Dante looked out the tinted window as the convoy pulled away from the burning pier, leaving behind a swarm of federal vehicles and emergency medical crews.
“You raised a king, Rachel,” Dante added quietly. “And I promise you, no one in this city will ever threaten either of you again.”
